  • Mahalo to the students from University of Hawaiʻi's Marine Option Program who joined us for an educational huki event! Not only did they get to learn more about island marine conservation but they also busted out their snorkels to help us remove 80 lbs of tough-to-reach invasive algae 🙌🏽

  • A mega huki event with over 110 volunteers from Hawai'i Pacific University's Marine Biology program, Honolulu Magazine, ʻIolani Leo Club, OPIHI Program, and Farrington Leo Club! They helped us to remove 2,680 pounds of invasive limu, all of which was donated to Keiki & Plow to be recycled and used as natural and organic compost. MAHALO volunteers! 🤙🏽

  • This is what it looks like when your community shows UP! 🙌🏽 We are so grateful that so many people are so eager to come out and help us. It's truly heartwarming that so many of you care so deeply and really want to give back. You keep our team busy with these huki events (we're even super booked into April of next year!) but we gotta say this is a GOOD problem to have. Mahalo mahalo mahalo!

  • Grateful for our partnership with KCC! These students spent multiple days at our "living lab" in Maunalua Bay, gaining hands-on experience and learning in the field. As a bonus, they helped us remove 1,000 lbs of invasive algae too. We love inspiring the next generation to continue innovating, researching, learning, and caring for our island home.

  • We've partnered with UH Ph.D. student to study eDNA in the Bay! With funding from the State Grant in Aid, MM has partnered with Patrick Nichols, Zoology Ph.D. Candidate at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, to conduct an eDNA study in Maunalua Bay. All organisms in the environment leave genetic material, from cells, tissues, fluids, and excrement. eDNA is a technique that analyzes genetic material from organisms in the environment to identify species and assess biodiversity. MM plans to collect samples from 20 sites - nearshore and offshore - to better understand species biodiversity across the Bay.
