The Major Cities Chiefs Association’s new white paper on Digital Evidence is an exceptional resource.
Here's why:
✅ It's filled with valuable information but written for the non-technical stakeholder.
✅ The challenges around digital evidence aren't going away - nearly every investigation has a nexus to data, and almost every case involves a digital device.
✅ It addresses tech, but also topics like budget, personnel, privacy, and emergent issues like A.I.
✅ It was written by people who work in this space every day.
✅ An agency staffed with trained people, using tools sufficient to conduct modern investigations is far more likely to identify the correct suspect & secure justice for victims than one that is not.
✅ Everyone including agency executives, prosecutors, budget managers, patrol officers, detectives, and analysts needs to understand these issues.
✅ Legal standards regarding digital evidence continue to evolve; compliance is critical to ensure evidence is admissible in court and that sensitive data is kept confidential & secure.
It was an honor to facilitate these conversations during the past year.
My hope is that we have delivered a resource that prepares leaders to have more informed conversations with their communities, staff and local administrators.
