  • At MaineHealth, collaboration and innovation drive improved patient care. When Marcy Lawless, MS, RD, LD, a dietitian at Franklin Hospital, began providing per diem nutrition services at Stephens Hospital, she quickly identified an opportunity to strengthen nutrition care across the region. With support from Franklin Hospital President Barbara Sergio, BSN, MSHA, CPHQ, Marcy spearheaded the creation of a regional model for clinical nutrition services, uniting Franklin Hospital, Stephens Hospital, and Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire under one cohesive program. Now serving as Regional Nutrition Manager, Marcy leads a team of eight dietitians and diet technicians, ensuring consistency and expertise in inpatient care and outpatient counseling across all three hospitals. “My goals were unifying the nutrition care model to ensure that we provide the best nutrition care under the guidance of what the science dictates and to make certain that patient care is consistent at all three hospitals,” said Marcy. “I have hired three fantastic new dietitians who bring expertise in areas we were lacking, and as a result, the depth of knowledge our team can offer has become enriched.” This regional approach bridges gaps in care, ensures science-based nutrition interventions, and significantly improves patient outcomes. By thinking beyond individual facilities, Marcy and her team are demonstrating the power of collaboration in delivering high-quality, patient-centered nutrition care. • 66% of Maine residents live in rural areas, yet most counties face significant mental health professional shortages. Suicide rates are highest in these underserved regions, underscoring the urgent need for expanded psychiatry services. MaineHealth’s Rural Residency Program (RRP) is meeting this challenge. This four-year program trains psychiatry residents with two years at Mainehealth Maine Medical Center Portland and two years in Rockland focusing on outpatient psychiatry. Residents gain firsthand experience addressing the unique challenges of rural care, including complex cases and limited access to primary care. “These residents get the genuine experience of living, working and being part of a rural community,” says Dr. Harold Van Lonkhuyzen, the program’s onsite director. “Hopefully, they will decide to pursue careers here or in other underserved communities. This program will help improve the quality of care by enhancing our educational mission and increasing access as the residents are seeing additional patients.” With programs like RRP, MaineHealth is paving the way for better mental health care in rural communities.
