NorDx would like to welcome our newest team member, Dr. Nicole Valenzuela Director of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Laboratory. Dr. Nicole Valenzuela completed her doctoral training at the University of California, Los Angeles, in research focused on the mechanisms of organ transplant rejection. She then obtained board certification in Clinical Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics from the ACHI in 2016 and served as an Assistant and Associate Director at the UCLA Immunogenetics Center until 2024. Dr. Valenzuela replaced Dr. Ron Rubocki as Director of HLA Laboratory at NorDx / MaineHealth upon his retirement in November 2024. In the US, over 90,000 people with kidney failure are waiting for a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, not every person can find a good “match” among potential donors. Dr. Valenzuela’s particular interest is in facilitating safe and timely transplant of the most difficult to match patients. The HLA Laboratory performs the immune compatibility testing between transplant recipients and their donors (sometimes even in the middle of the night). As such, the lab is an integral partner in the process of organ transplantation, before and after transplant. Looking forward in 2025, the NorDx HLA Laboratory is working with the Maine Transplant Program to implement a more efficient practice of assessing donor compatibility (“virtually”), which will shorten the time from offer to transplant. Recently, MaineHealth shared the following inspiring journey about kidney donation https://lnkd.in/eBEY3hei College of American Pathologists (CAP), MaineHealth, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), The Compass Group Laboratory Leaders, AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY AND IMMUNOGENETICS (ASHI) #nordxnow #joinourteam
