Founded in 1876, the Society provides a full range of civil legal services as well as criminal defense work, and juvenile rights representation in Family Court. Our core service is to provide free legal assistance to New Yorkers who live at or below the poverty level and cannot afford to hire a lawyer when confronted with a legal problem.

On Wednesday, The Legal Aid Society family gathered at Fordham University School of Law for an inspiring evening celebrating our shared achievements over the past year — and our vision for the future. The 148th Annual Meeting & Awards was a joyous occasion, shining a spotlight on the incredible dedication of our staff and the enduring strength of our community. We were honored to welcome Legal Aid alumna, the Hon. Dianne T. Renwick, Presiding Justice of the New York State Supreme Court (Appellate Division, First Department) as our keynote speaker. A trailblazer and Bronx native, Justice Renwick began her legal journey as a staff attorney in our Bronx Criminal Defense division. Her historic rise to Presiding Justice—the first woman of color to lead any Appellate Division in New York—is an inspiration to us all. Her distinguished career and unwavering commitment to civic education remind us of the profound impact of public service. The evening also featured the presentation of our Orison S. Marden Awards, established in 1976 to honor Orison S. Marden, a former Board Chair and passionate pro bono volunteer. These awards recognize staff who go above and beyond for our clients. This year, we celebrated the life and dedication of Abida Chaudhry — posthumous recipient of one of our Core Staff Awards — for her work as support staff in the Criminal Defense Practice. Alexandra Matta also received a Core Staff Award for her contributions as a forensic social worker in the Juvenile Rights Practice. Theresa Moser was honored with the Staff Attorney Award for her exceptional work as a staff attorney in the Juvenile Rights Practice's Special Litigation and Law Reform Unit. And Arielle Reid received the Manager Award for her leadership as Director of the Criminal Defense Practice's Decarceration Project. We also presented the Sandra Scott Memorial Award, which honors an exemplary employee on a non-legal administration team. This year’s recipient was Luis R. Hernandez Jr., Building Maintenance Coordinator in Facilities. The award, established in memory of Sandra Scott, former Chief Financial Officer at Legal Aid, recognizes employees who exemplify her spirit of courage and integrity. In addition, staff members reaching milestone years of service at The Legal Aid Society were honored with Longevity Awards, recognizing their enduring commitment to our mission. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event a success! Together, we celebrate the work we’ve done and the challenges we’re ready to tackle in the year ahead.
The Legal Aid Society, the nation’s largest and oldest public defense and legal services provider, is seeking a highly skilled Chief of Staff to directly support our CEO in driving strategic initiatives and ensuring operational excellence. The Chief of Staff will work directly with LAS Attorney-in-Chief and CEO Twyla Carter, the first Black woman and first Asian-American to lead the organization since 1876, to realize a bold vision for justice in the 21st century. During Twyla’s tenure, Legal Aid’s attorneys and staff have worked tirelessly to defend New York City’s Right to Shelter and to protect incarcerated New Yorkers from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island. They have obtained important victories, from securing social security benefits for a child in foster care to championing legislation that automatically seals certain conviction records, ending the perpetual punishment for many deserving New Yorkers. Since joining the organization, Carter has worked relentlessly to improve contract procurement and payments and secure additional funding to increase baseline salaries for all staff significantly. She has been routinely named in City & State as one of NY’s top 100 leaders and was recently named as one of the Nonprofit Power Players for 2024 by PoliticsNY and amNY Metro. And this week, for the first time in its nearly 150-year history, Legal Aid is proud to announce its inclusion in Newsweek’s highly esteemed Excellence 1000 Index 2025. Out of more than 25,000 companies reviewed, Newsweek recognized the top 1,000 for this achievement. Legal Aid ranked 785th with a score of 4.1 out of 5, distinguishing itself as one of 11 law firms named to the list and the only nonprofit law firm. This recognition highlights organizations making outstanding contributions in their respective fields and underscores Legal Aid’s enduring commitment to providing high-quality legal representation while advocating for New York City’s most vulnerable residents. The Chief of Staff will help build on this success by acting as a key advisor, primary confidant, and thought partner and will be responsible for executing key initiatives by leading cross-functional strategic work across the organization. This dynamic person will also be a primary liaison with internal and external stakeholders. Are you ready to redefine justice in the 21st century? Bad asses need apply here: https://lnkd.in/eRQ5k9JQ

Attendees engaged with pressing topics, including the limitations in forensic DNA validation, and insights from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s landmark report on human factors in forensic DNA. The event brought together experts and advocates whose work pushes at the boundaries of justice and accountability in forensic science. A highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Tamara Giwa, Executive Director of the Federal Defenders of New York. Legal Aid congratulates our Attorney-in-Chief and CEO Twyla Carter for being named on this year’s PoliticsNY & amNY Nonprofit Power Players list! The leaders highlighted on this year’s list are the driving forces behind a variety of programs and initiatives improving the lives of New Yorkers from all walks of life. Focusing on important issues such as education access, race and gender equity, affordable housing, food insecurity and more the 2024 Nonprofit Power Players are vital leaders in the fight for a better New York for all. During Twyla’s tenure, Legal Aid’s attorneys and staff have worked tirelessly to defend New York City’s Right to Shelter and to protect incarcerated New Yorkers from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island. They have obtained important victories, from securing social security benefits for a child in foster care to championing legislation that will automatically seal certain conviction records, ending the perpetual punishment for many deserving New Yorkers. Since day one, Carter has worked relentlessly since joining the organization to improve contract procurement and payments and securing additional funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff. When asked how policymakers could support organizations like Legal Aid, Carter elaborated. “Too often, organizations like ours are overshadowed by other legal system actors, namely the police and prosecutors. This has led to chronic underfunding, jeopardizing the legal services low-income New Yorkers are constitutionally and legally entitled to receive,” she said. “Policymakers must ensure that organizations like The Legal Aid Society are fully funded so that our most vulnerable neighbors have access to robust legal representation in their times of need.” Congratulations to Twyla! Today, Adriene Holder - Chief Attorney of Legal Aid's Civil Practice - joined New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams at a press conference celebrating a $5 billion increase in the City's housing budget under the City For All housing plan. This timely investment marks a significant stride toward addressing New York City’s housing crisis and ensuring every New Yorker has access to stable and affordable housing. "This additional funding is more than an investment, it's a lifeline for thousands of New Yorkers," Adriene said at the press conference. "It will help more families break free from the vicious cycle of eviction, homelessness, and poverty, and secure the stability of permanent housing." With additional support for the CityFHEPS voucher program and the restoration of $7.6 million for the Anti-Harassment Tenant Protection program, this plan promises to empower tenants, hold landlords accountable, and preserve the dignity and safety of every home across the five boroughs. The Legal Aid Society commends the leadership of Speaker Adams and the City Council's unwavering commitment to creating a housing system that supports working and middle-class New Yorkers. Our defenders witness firsthand the life-changing impact of these programs, and we remain committed to advocating for housing justice alongside our clients and communities.
