The Legal Aid Society, the nation’s largest and oldest public defense and legal services provider, is seeking a highly skilled Chief of Staff to directly support our CEO in driving strategic initiatives and ensuring operational excellence. The Chief of Staff will work directly with LAS Attorney-in-Chief and CEO Twyla Carter, the first Black woman and first Asian-American to lead the organization since 1876, to realize a bold vision for justice in the 21st century. During Twyla’s tenure, Legal Aid’s attorneys and staff have worked tirelessly to defend New York City’s Right to Shelter and to protect incarcerated New Yorkers from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island. They have obtained important victories, from securing social security benefits for a child in foster care to championing legislation that automatically seals certain conviction records, ending the perpetual punishment for many deserving New Yorkers. Since joining the organization, Carter has worked relentlessly to improve contract procurement and payments and secure additional funding to increase baseline salaries for all staff significantly. She has been routinely named in City & State as one of NY’s top 100 leaders and was recently named as one of the Nonprofit Power Players for 2024 by PoliticsNY and amNY Metro. And this week, for the first time in its nearly 150-year history, Legal Aid is proud to announce its inclusion in Newsweek’s highly esteemed Excellence 1000 Index 2025. Out of more than 25,000 companies reviewed, Newsweek recognized the top 1,000 for this achievement. Legal Aid ranked 785th with a score of 4.1 out of 5, distinguishing itself as one of 11 law firms named to the list and the only nonprofit law firm. This recognition highlights organizations making outstanding contributions in their respective fields and underscores Legal Aid’s enduring commitment to providing high-quality legal representation while advocating for New York City’s most vulnerable residents. The Chief of Staff will help build on this success by acting as a key advisor, primary confidant, and thought partner and will be responsible for executing key initiatives by leading cross-functional strategic work across the organization. This dynamic person will also be a primary liaison with internal and external stakeholders. Are you ready to redefine justice in the 21st century? Bad asses need apply here: https://lnkd.in/eRQ5k9JQ
