About us
IIT Kanpur has established the Kotak School of Sustainability with the vision of making a major contribution toward preserving the environment and fighting climate change. The School’s establishment recognizes the need for the role of higher education institutions in finding appropriate solutions to fulfil the requirements of sustainable development and to connect academia with industry, businesses and other stakeholders. Enabled by a generous grant from the Kotak Mahindra Bank, the school will further cutting-edge research and conduct programs and courses that prepare future generations for leadership in sustainability. It will be a conglomerate of departments and centers at IIT Kanpur, bringing together academics and researchers working in different aspects of sustainability to develop interdisciplinary solutions suitable for the industry to adopt. The school will also strongly focus on capacity-building programs for working professionals, enabling them to understand and integrate sustainable solutions into practice. A core belief driving the establishment of the School is that meeting the global challenge posed by climate change and degradation of the environment requires cooperation and collaboration on an unprecedented scale.

The Center of Excellence on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Cities was awarded t0 IIT Kanpur by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Education on October 15, 2024. It was received by Prof. Sachchida Nand Tripathi, Dean Kotak School of Sustainability and Project Director, AI-CoE for Sustainable Cities. Directors from India’s premier educational institutions, researchers, start-ups, industry and civil-society representatives, government officials and journalists graced the event with their presence. AI-CoEs are at the center stage in the New Era of Scalable Innovation. For Phase-1, the Proof-of-Concept stage, 5 institutions were shortlisted from among the top 100 Higher Education Institutions of India and under-went a rigorous evaluation for 6 months. The IIT Kanpur led consortium demonstrated practical and novel solutions for air quality, energy, urban governance and mobility verticals in-turn being designated to address pressing urban challenges. AI-CoE for Sustainable Cities, will be under the ambit of Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur. The Phase-2 journey despite not being so smooth, is achievable with the support and wishes of all stakeholders. Kotak School of Sustainability - IIT Kanpur at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, University of Minnesota, and University at Buffalo recently conducted the Sustainable GeoCommunities (SGC) Planning Workshop on June 24-25 at IIT Kanpur Outreach Center in Noida. The event was attended by the delegates from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Goa, AMRITA Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Chennai Campus and more than 20 other organizations. The workshop participants discussed the SGC concept and its alignment with global priorities, opportunities and challenges in community centric projects, role of universities and future collaborative projects. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, who welcomed the delegation. The opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh, Provost of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Prof. Dhirendra Katti, Director of IIT Goa, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, and Barbara Snyder, President of the Association of American Universities (AAU). IIT Kanpur and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur sign an MoU to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels, where both institutes will engage in the joint projects to conduct cutting-edge research and develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology to enhance biofuel production in the country with improved efficiency and sustainability. The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Shri Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department of Food and Public Distribution, Govt. of India; Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur; and Dr. Seema Paroha, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur. The focus area of this collaborative research work will take up the study on enhancing the production of Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG, Aviation Fuel, and Green Hydrogen, etc. from biomass, a renewable source of energy.
