When Brooke, or "TigerLily," was nine and her little brother was three, her Mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. All at once, her sense of stability, her routines, and her moments of carefree childhood joy were replaced with near-constant feelings of fear, worry, and uncertainty about what the future held for her family. Then, she found Kesem. Brooke didn't know much about #CampKesem before she arrived, but "quickly realized just how special this place was." "For the first time, I didn't feel alone," said Brooke. "I felt supported, understood, and like I belonged there. Kesem gave me a space to be myself and experience joy for the first time since my Mom's diagnosis." Now, Brooke carries those transformative experiences with her as a student leader at Kesem at Mississippi State University, paying it forward and supporting other children who are navigating a parent's cancer like she once did.
