✍🏼 ✨ Check out our invited commentary in JAMA Network Open: Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Rural-Urban Imbalance in Health Care Through the NHSC Rural America faces significant challenges in accessing healthcare, and the findings from Baker et al. underscore the need for tailored workforce policies to bridge the rural-urban clinician gap. The study reveals that despite a dramatic increase in National Health Service Corps (NHSC) clinicians between 2000 and 2020, the proportion of rural clinicians declined, highlighting systemic issues in recruitment and retention. From an Industrial/Organizational Psychology perspective, these trends emphasize the need to align organizational incentives with clinician motivations, while addressing barriers unique to rural practice. These findings reaffirm that addressing rural clinician shortages requires a systems-level approach, blending evidence-based workforce policies with a nuanced understanding of individual and organizational behavior. With targeted interventions, we can create sustainable solutions to improve access and outcomes for rural populations.
