In honor of Veterans' Day, which is Monday, November 11, we are pleased to share this message from some of our VA Health Systems investigators. They share why they choose to work in VA, what their career in public service means to them, and how important their interactions with Veterans are. https://lnkd.in/g6Ce2-aW

Research dedicated to improving care delivery, quality, and cost for our nation's Veterans.
About us
VA Health Systems Research is an integral part of VA’s quest for innovative solutions to today’s healthcare challenges. VA HSR supports research that underscores all aspects of VA healthcare, focusing on patient care, cost, and quality. VA HSR is an actively managed portfolio that's part of the VA Office of Research & Development and provides a collaborative and cross-cutting research portfolio, inspired by intersectional clinical, organizational, or basic research questions. Studies conducted by the approximately 1,000 funded researchers are comprehensive, and address critical issues for Veterans as well as for the VA healthcare system as a whole. The Veterans Health Administration is the nation's only integrated healthcare system, and as such provide investigators with a unique population and data set from which to understand the critical health concerns facing our nations' Veterans. VA HSR findings have had major impact outside the VA, in areas ranging from cholesterol screening guidelines to opioid efficacy.

Considering a career in public service? You could do a lot worse than supporting our nation's Veterans. If you want to learn more about our research—and how and why investigators choose to work in VA—check out our recent slate of videos. You'll find investigators telling their stories from their perspectives. https://lnkd.in/gTfBCi65

Many research organizations view data as a one-way street: it's something you collect from volunteers or participants, and that's that. But at VA, our research both involves—and communicates with—our key constituents: Veterans. This circular loop of participation is evident in one of our most incredibly moving research projects: PhotoVoice. This unique methodological approach to understanding trauma uses words and photos to elicit what other therapeutic approaches may not. The second exhibit from the HSR-funded PhotoVoice project, "From War to Home: The Impact of Invisible Injuries" is being displayed at the Elizabeth Dole Foundation's annual conference in Washington, DC, on September 24. If you're in the area, stop by and see what research—and true constituent engagement—can look like. https://lnkd.in/gtcyDnGQ

The Designing for Dissemination, Implementation and Sustainability (D4DI&S) Learning Hub was developed to promote learning health systems by increasing the knowledge and skills of those who are ready to disseminate and implement evidence-based programs across diverse clinical settings and Veteran populations. They're now enrolling for their fall session! The program is open to both VA and non-VA folks. This is a great opportunity for clinicians, care providers, and even clinical managers to close the gap between knowledge and practice. https://lnkd.in/epz_BExj

We've got some great new summer reading available, including the latest issue of VA HSR FORUM. The July-August issue looks at research around homeless Veterans, and how data can be leveraged to address this challenging issue. https://lnkd.in/g2NuS8Kx

One of the great things about the work we do as VA researchers is to share our findings throughout the VA system—and connect with the private sector via the AcademyHealth annual research meeting! Research findings are presented in selected panels as well as via four VA-supported sessions. This was from nursing research and features our newly-minted Scientific Portfolio Manager, Amelia Schlak.

Hey folks! Our Center for Dissemination & Education Resources is hiring a writer/editor. It's a small team, physically based at the VA Boston Healthcare System's Jamaica Plain campus, but would likely be in large part remote. https://lnkd.in/gidKY4sZ

From current research projects to funding to citations, everything you need to know is on the HSR website! Granted, it's not the most glamourous of sites (we're looking at you, government-required templates), but it has what you need! Job listings can be found under the "About" section, and unlike USAJobs, most have direct contact information available. So have a look around! Watch a video! Check out a podcast! After all, it's not all dry citations...... https://lnkd.in/eqSpSpfU

One of the most important aspects of doing research in VA is impact—either through changes to policy or clinical practice. In many research environments, research results disappear into a vacuum, but in VA, there is a collaborative effort that includes a warm handoff of research to operations. We honor that impact each year in our System Impact award, and this year, the kudos go to Seppo Rinne, MD, of the VA HSR Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research, and Leslie Hausmann, PhD, of the VA HSR Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion. https://lnkd.in/gibFJVau
