The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed a regulation to phase out 14c certificates—an outdated practice allowing employers to pay workers with disabilities less than minimum wage. On average, workers under these certificates earn just $3.34/hour, often performing the same tasks as their colleagues. This change is long overdue. Here’s why this matters: -14c certificates are based on antiquated, ableist notions that devalue contributions. -The Fair Labor Standards Act, created in 1938, ignored the potential of individuals with disabilities in an evolving workforce. -Technology, workplace adaptations, and disability rights advancements have made competitive, integrated employment more attainable than ever.
