Hartford Hospital, founded in 1854, is one of the largest teaching hospitals and tertiary care centers in New England with perhaps the region’s busiest surgery practice, has been training physicians for over 160 years. The hospital is an 867-bed regional referral center that provides high-quality care in all clinical disciplines. Among its divisions is The Institute of Living, a 114-bed mental health facility with a national and international reputation of excellence. Jefferson House, a 104-bed long-term care facility, is also part of Hartford Hospital. Hartford Hospital is part of Hartford HealthCare, Connecticut’s most comprehensive healthcare network. Our fully integrated health system includes a tertiary-care teaching hospital, an acute-care community teaching hospital, an acute-care hospital and trauma center, three community hospitals, the state’s most extensive behavioral health network, a large multi-specialty physician group, a regional home care system, an array of senior care services, a large physical therapy and rehabilitation network and an accountable care organization. Through its institute model, Hartford HealthCare offers the highest standards of care for cancer, heart and vascular services, neuroscience, orthopedics and urology.

  • A hallmark of Hartford HealthCare’s culture is to ensure the continued development of our leaders. This investment in our colleagues allows us to grow and nurture dedicated executives who are ready for their next leadership opportunity. We are beyond proud and delighted to announce two important promotions: Bimal Patel, President of the Hartford and Northwest Regions and Senior Vice President for Hartford HealthCare, has been named HHC Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He replaces Mike Daglio, who announced his decision to leave Hartford HealthCare at the end of April. Bimal joined Hartford HealthCare in February 2009 as Senior Vice President for Support Services at Hartford Hospital. He led numerous facilities and services integration initiatives across the system. He served as Hartford’s regional Vice President for Operations and, from 2014 to 2015 as Hartford HealthCare’s Senior Vice President for Operational Integration and as President of the East Region from 2015 to 2017, where he led efforts to expand access for ambulatory services throughout the East Region. He has served as President of the Hartford Region since 2017, and assumed additional responsibilities for the Northwest Region in 2022. Cheryl Ficara, RN, Senior Vice President for Operations in the Hartford Region, will be President of the Hartford Region, and a Senior Vice President at HHC - the first female president of the Hartford Region. Cheryl has a long and dedicated career at Hartford Hospital, which she joined as critical care nurse in 1990. After serving as Hartford Hospital’s Director of Perioperative Services, Cheryl was named Regional Vice President for Patient Care Services in January 2011. In 2022, she was named the Hartford Region’s Senior Vice President for Operations. Cheryl is an active thought leader, having co-authored several publications, and is a noted national speaker on topics including clinical innovation and professional development. Bimal and Cheryl are consummate professionals who have demonstrated their commitment to our values, and their value to our system, in countless ways for many years. They are well prepared for their new roles and responsibilities, and will continue to bring their deep knowledge, commitment to excellence, and passion for service to all they do.

  • Sarah Cruz, a Bone & Joint Institute colleague, and a member of the board of directors of the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, recently traveled to Washington D.C. and met with congressional offices and representatives to advocate for the profession and educate about the importance of sterile processing technicians. These technicians play an important role in infection prevention and safety. Thank you, Sarah!

    Congratulations to the Bone & Joint Institute for being named among the 2024 Hip & Knee Surgery Research All-Stars by Avant-Garde Health! This recognition highlights outstanding surgeons and hospitals whose contributions to healthcare research significantly enhance the quality of patient care. The study examined the research of more than 4,000 hospitals and 90,000 surgeons based on the quantity and quality of their published research.

  • The Tallwood Urology & Kidney Institute is proud to have completed the first Focal One High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) cases in Connecticut for the treatment of prostate cancer. HIFU technology ablates prostate tissue by focusing high-intensity ultrasound waves on the affected area, destroying the cells in the gland without damaging healthy surrounding tissue. Access to Focal One HIFU at Hartford HealthCare means patients with prostate cancer have access to innovative treatment options close to home.

  • “Made in Connecticut!” We're starting off the new year with a precious miracle - Hartford HealthCare’s first baby born at Hartford Hospital! Meet Baby Gatewood! Murielle and Sterling Gatewood from Enfield have been blessed with the arrival of their beautiful baby boy. “He’s our New Year’s blessing!” Weighing in at 7 lbs 9 oz and measuring 20 inches, Baby Gatewood made his grand entrance into the world at 12:06 a.m., becoming the first baby born at Hartford Hospital this year. Let us all join in celebrating this joyous occasion by sending our warmest wishes to the Gatewood family. A special shout out to the Governor’s office for this little onesie - “Made in Connecticut” @govnedlamont
