🔔UPDATE 🔔 Unfortunately, H.R. 9495 passed the U.S. House of Representatives this morning. This bill would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to designate nonprofits of their choosing as “terrorism supporting organizations” and potentially strip them of their tax-exempt status. The vote was 219 to 184, with 30 members not voting. Hawai‘i's Representative Case voted in support of the bill, while Representative Tokuda voted in opposition. H.R. 9495 now moves to the Senate for consideration. HANO joins many nonprofit allies in opposition to this bill and continues to monitor this issue with our partners working directly in D.C. Mahalo to everyone who took urgent action on this problematic bill, and for your continued support of nonprofits in Hawai‘i and across the continent!

🚨ACTION ALERT!🚨 Congress is considering a bill that would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to designate nonprofits as “terrorist supporting organizations” at the Secretary’s discretion, without requiring the Secretary to share their full evidence or reasoning with accused nonprofits. HANO encourages Hawai‘i nonprofits and community members to immediately call Rep. Ed Case’s office and urge him to flip his vote to NO when H.R. 9495 goes to the House floor later this week. Contact Rep. Case at his Washington DC Office: tel:2022252726 and Honolulu Office: tel:8086506688, and don’t forget to mention if you or your organization are constituents from the island of O‘ahu. Sample phone script: “Aloha, my name is [first and last name] and I live in [community name and island]. I am calling to urge Representative Case to vote NO on H.R. 9495. While the legislation is trying to stop terrorism, this bill would be extremely harmful to the nonprofit sector and communities in Hawaii that Rep. Case serves. Please oppose H.R. 9495. Mahalo!” More information about the bill can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gcNTQUkw
