Greening the country, community by community. Supporting communities to tackle climate change in their local areas
About us
Greening the Country, Community by Community. We all feel overwhelmed by the enormity of Climate Change but if we all just focus on our own community, we can create a patchwork of ‘green communities’ right across the country. It’s up to us! The Greening Campaign is a structured process, guiding you to act on Climate Change and Biodiversity within your community. We have worked with over 200 communities so all their experience is available for you to use, and we are there to support you throughout. We want you to succeed and so we teach you how to motivate everyone, get everyone involved and how to make it fun and rewarding.

This is Terry the tick and he has a very important role! He was created by Greening Ringwood to raise awareness and get people talking about the risks of infectious diseases that ticks pose in the UK, largely due to climate change, during warmer months and milder winters. As part of our Health Impacts of Climate Change pillar, Terry helps people learn how to stay safe and enjoy their time in nature and be aware of what to do avoid ticks, how to check for them and what to do if you find one. Terry often goes on tour to other communities to help them spread the word too - Well done Terry!

We are delighted to welcome a new Observer to our Board, Chitra Nadarajah! Chitra is Head of Climate Change and Environmental Strategy at Hampshire County Council and no stranger to the work that the Greening Campaign delivers as she and her team have previously worked with the project to establish Greening Communities across Hampshire, through the Community Renewal Fund. Chitra will be able to bring her wider network and knowledge of relevant activities in the Hampshire area to support the activities of the Greening Campaign. Hampshire County Council

To support our greening groups in their aim to encourage waste prevention in their community, we provide each participating group with a Waste Prevention Trail. The information boards can be attached to posts or fencing so can be displayed in a prominent area in the community to engage as many residents as possible. The waste boards are fun, bright and above all, informative as they include a quiz to test residents’ knowledge on waste prevention. Each Board has a statement about waste, a solution to the problem, plus a quiz question. The Trail also invites residents to complete a waste diary so they can measure what they throw away. A number of our communities have displayed the Waste Prevention Trail so far and the latest group Tiptoe, Hordle & Everton Greening Campaign have just put theirs up in Hordle Recreation ground! As part of our Energy Efficient Warmer homes pillar, we provide thermal imaging cameras for communities to take images of their homes. Instead of picking out different elements of light to capture a photograph, the thermal imaging captures different levels of heat. The different levels of heat are shown in a range of colours. Usually the white, yellow and red are warmest, and the blue and black are coldest. The thermal images help people understand where heat loss is likely to be escaping from their home. This is great for spotting where some extra loft insulation or some draft excluders are needed, and also if major works such as cavity wall insulation need addressing. The winter is the busiest month for the thermal imaging teams and all of our communities have been trained and are ready to spot the heat loss in their local homes. To show how a thermal imaging camera works, and to add a bit of fun, @GreeningFleet and @EastleighTownGreeningCampaign have demonstrated how the cameras work on people, rabbits and even a Grinch too! As part of our Space for Nature pillar, households and communities are encouraged to create pollinator patches and corridors by planting native plants and wildflowers to increase biodiversity in their gardens and open spaces. Last month @GreeningBishopstoke were kindly donated LOTS of wildflower seeds by Brambridge Park Garden Centre and they spent yesterday scattering those seeds around their pollinator patch at St Paul's Church, Fair Oak Road. Well done team - looking forward to some great wildflowers in the Spring! Greening the country, community by community. #pollinatorpatches #spacefornature Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

Greening the country, community by community As part of the Greening campaign journey communities commit to undertake up to 5 small challenges to help tackle climate change. To demonstrate their commitment each participating household displays a card in their window - the cards are then counted to show how much Co2, water or other savings the community have made together. Well done to Greening Fleet, Greening Denmead and Greening Ringwood and all of the other greening communities for their impressive work so far! #tacklingclimatechange #communityaction #climatechange
