Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity

About us

Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is an international non-profit organisation committed to advancing the sustainability of our oceans through increased transparency. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, our mapping platform provides a powerful tool for ocean governance, empowering anyone to view or download data and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time, for free. GFW was founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google. Our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our funding partners. Our research, data and technology partners are central to achieving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver actionable insights to increase transparency in commercial fishing and the sustainable management of our oceans.

  • 🛰️ Unprecedented. Innovative. Game-changing. 📊 In January 2024, we broke new ground when the findings of a novel study, led by Global Fishing Watch, were published in the journal Nature. 🌊 The pioneering effort, undertaken alongside research partners from SkyTruthUC Santa BarbaraDuke University and University of Wisconsin-Madison, produced the first global map of large vessel traffic and offshore infrastructure—revealing activity that was previously dark to public monitoring systems. 🎆 With the invaluable support of our funding, technology and wider partners, we look forward to furthering the application of this work in 2025. • ⚓️ Forced labor in global fisheries is difficult to detect and harder to eliminate. 🛰️ To better estimate the extent of this human rights violation, our Data Scientist - Rocio Joo, uses advanced technology to develop algorithms that identify patterns across vessels with a high risk of forced labor. 📊 With the goal of creating greater transparency, Global Fishing Watch collaborates with port authorities and seafood industry stakeholders to receive more data, thus improving our modeling and helping guide inspections and seafood purchasing. • 🌊 From his early experiences sailing at about age five to his current role at Global Fishing Watch, our Fisheries Analyst, Luca Marsaglia, is never too far removed from the ocean. 👥 Joining our organization meant being a part of a global network of people whose passion for the marine environment—and the life it contains, mirrored his own. 🎞️ "Working in fisheries is what I chose because I very much like the interconnection between the ecological, social and economic side of things," Luca shared. • 🌊 From the dawn of time, the ocean has been looking out for our planet. It creates oxygen, regulates weather and absorbs almost a third of all carbon dioxide produced by humans. 🐟 But even a finite resource has its limits. Under the compounding pressures of human activity, climate change and other threats, the ocean is struggling to recover from the demands it currently face. 👥 At Global Fishing Watch, technology, transparency and equitable access to data-driven insights are at the heart of our response. 🎥 Our team shares how we are harnessing #AI and satellite technology to help build an accurate picture of human activity at sea, and support real-world action aimed at protecting biodiversity, fisheries and livelihoods.
