One of my favorite things to do at Glean has nothing to do with CS; It’s running the Glean Culture awards. For the third year, peers had the opportunity to nominate others under our 4 core company values including “why”. Every year I get to read about how my colleagues are out there kicking A%^. It motivates me to no end to know I work with amazing people. The "why" is shared with every single nominee. I do it every year because I care and I am a big believer that the people that get you through your day to day are the same people you work with shoulder to shoulder. Building a company at AI speed? Glean’s founders know the feeling — and they’ve learned a thing or two along the way. Here’s their hard-won advice for startups looking to keep up: ⚫ Be willing to scrap timetables and product plans. What made sense in January might be outdated by March. Always be ready to course correct if needed. ⚫ Have a bias toward action. The amount of time spent on a decision should be proportional to how hard it is to change it later. If something is easy to change, any amount of time you wasted on it is too long. ⚫ Keep an eye on competitors, but don’t obsess over them. Know who you’re up against and what they’re doing. But remain true to your North Star rather than trying to match rivals feature by feature. Had a fantastic time at our recent dinner in New York with execs across media, financial services, pharmaceuticals, and tech discussing the opportunities and challenges of the evolving AI landscape. While leaders represented a range of industries, a few consistent themes stood out: 🔒 AI governance is crucial. Especially in large global corporations and highly regulated industries, permissions enforcement is key to ensuring LLMs exclusively use data accessible to each individual user. And ensuring that data fed into LLMs is only used to answer a user's specific query— without being used for model training— is critical. 👩🔬 Leaders are constantly discovering new use cases for AI. It was fascinating to hear about the various ways people are experimenting. From using AI to create podcast summaries of investor decks and gain inspiration for speeches, to exploring how AI could be used to identify employees who need additional support, the potential applications of AI are vast and varied. ⏰ Time to value is key. Multiple CIOs shared their experiences of attempting to build their own AI assistants and applications. The consensus was clear: building these solutions in-house takes too long and diverts valuable resources. Instead, leveraging existing enterprise-ready solutions like Glean provides quicker time to value, allowing organizations to focus on their core competencies. What struck me most was the collective understanding that AI isn't a trend, but a fundamental transformation reshaping how we approach problem-solving and competitive strategy.
