As the year comes to a close, I feel incredibly privileged to have journeyed from Arica to Punta Arenas, connecting with the presidents and leaders of Chile's most prominent universities, including the University of Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Tarapacá, Universidad de La Serena, Universidad de Concepción and Universidad de Magallanes. 🏫 These conversations underscored the pivotal role that Chile plays in the global astronomical community and the immense potential for collaboration to advance science and innovation. Through partnerships with institutions across the country, we are laying the groundwork to expand astronomical research and create new opportunities for Chilean scientists, students, and communities. I’m honored to play a part in bridging the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Chilean talent to unlock the secrets of the universe. Welcome Northwestern University to the Giant Magellan Telescope consortium! We're thrilled to have you join us. As the 9th U.S. institution to invest, Northwestern expands the Giant Magellan consortium to 15 members. Other partners hail from Australia, Brazil, Chile, Israel, South Korea & Taiwan. The Giant Magellan is now 40 precent under construction across 36 states and on track to be operational at Carnegie Science's Las Campanas Observatory in Chile by the early 2030s. Once completed, the Giant Magellan will deliver up to 200 times the resolution and sensitivity of today’s leading telescopes, offering unprecedented power for astronomical discovery.
