  • For five decades Gabriel Pérez’s sketches and methodical approach to problem-solving inspired his colleagues. Now he is retiring, and some of his colleagues have shared their reflections on working with him and witnessing his engineering expertise, which helped get three major NSF NOIRLab telescopes off the ground. • Is that the Milky Way?? No, it’s NGC 7331 🤭! This magnificent spiral galaxy, also known as Caldwell 30, is located approximately 40 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. It is often thought of as a twin to the Milky Way owing to its similar size and spiral structure. However, there are a couple of features of its core that set it apart from our home galaxy. For instance, astronomers have found evidence that the Milky Way has a central bar of stars and dust cutting through its center, a feature common to many spiral galaxies. But NGC 7331 lacks this feature. Additionally, NGC 7331’s central bulge rotates in the opposite direction to its galactic disk — unusual behavior compared to other galaxies and different from what we observe in the Milky Way. • Meet Messier 83! Also known as the Southern Pinwheel, this galaxy is located twelve million light-years away and is one of the most prominent spiral galaxies in the night sky. 🌀 Its swirling spiral arms display a high rate of star formation and have been host to six observed supernovae. 🤩 This image was captured with the Department of Energy-fabricated Dark Energy Camera, mounted on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, a Program of NSF NOIRLab.
