However, the shift has sparked some debates. Concerns include: - risks to the privacy and security of students and teachers, - over-reliance on technology, - the urgent need for teacher training to integrate AI effectively. As President of the Ghana Edtech Alliance , I am thrilled to have participated in the maiden Community of Practice (CoP) event organized by Black Tech Lead —a truly engaging and inspiring gathering of tech professionals, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and youth leaders driving conversations around leadership and innovation in Africa’s tech ecosystem. It was a joy to moderate a thought-provoking panel session alongside accomplished leaders, including Isaac Newton Acquah - International Trade Centre , Kwame Stalwart - AyaHQ (Techstars '23) , and Joy Tari-Bagshaw , with the session framed by powerful questions raised by Dr. Esi Sey - Project Director YALI RLC West Africa Accra , such as: • Are the youth leading technology in Ghana and across Africa? • Are we creating technology grounded in African values and ethics? • How do we ensure our tech solutions are solving contextually relevant problems? These conversations not only highlighted the opportunities but also emphasized the responsibilities of Africa’s youth in leading a transformative, inclusive, and sustainable tech revolution. Key takeaways included the need to build mastery, embrace collaboration, focus on impactful solutions, and stay intentional about ethics and community-driven leadership. As Martin Luther King Jr. wisely stated, “You’re never too young. Change begins with the first steps.” Let’s empower our youth to take those steps and shape the future of Africa through bold, innovative, and ethical leadership. The Ghana Edtech Alliance (GETA) extends heartfelt appreciation to the Black Tech Lead team for organizing a thoroughly engaging, inspiring, and insightful maiden Community of Practice (CoP) event. We are honored to have been part of this impactful initiative, with our President, Kwame Nyatuame , expertly moderating a thought-provoking panel session alongside an esteemed group of panelists, including Isaac Newton Acquah - International Trade Centre , @kwame stalwart - AyaHQ (Techstars '23) and Joy Tari-Bagshaw. Dr. Esi Sey Project Director YALI RLC West Africa Accra set the stage for the dialogue by posing critical questions that resonate deeply within our tech ecosystem: • Are the youth really leading technology in Ghana and across the continent? • Who is a leader? • Are the youth creating technology that is appropriate to our context? • Are we creating technology grounded in African values and ethics? • Are we building technology that embodies what is good for us? • Africa is modernizing, but are we truly developing? These questions underscored the importance of a re-orientation for Africa’s youth amidst the excitement surrounding the continent’s evolving tech landscape. The panel discussion itself was raw, unfiltered, and focused on empowering the next generation by emphasizing key principles, including: • Mastery and continuous learning. • Purposeful execution. • The value of mentorship. • Prioritizing impact over hype. • Embracing failure as part of growth. • Building strong communities. • Focusing on a positive personal brand and collaborative spirit. • Maintaining a good and proactive attitude. The conversations served as a challenge and call to action for Africa’s youth to not only engage with the opportunities presented by technology but also to lead ethically, innovatively, and with a mindset rooted in making a lasting impact. As Dr. Sey’s reflections remind us, “The fire within the hearts of youth lights the path to a brighter future, and youthful enthusiasm is the spark that ignites innovation.” Special thanks to Charity Ofosuhene Ofosuhene and the entire team at Black Tech Lead for their leadership and dedication. The revolution and rapid pace of technological advancements should indeed serve as a wake-up call for education stakeholders—teachers, policymakers, curriculum designers, and learners alike—across Ghana and the continent. These developments urge us to reassess our approaches to education and skill-building. They are a reminder that the core mission of education should evolve to creatively leverage technological innovations to develop a new generation of human capital that is both competent and capable. This is the kind of workforce we need to address Africa’s unique and contextual challenges, from climate resilience to industrial growth. Nurturing problem-solvers, innovators, and critical thinkers must be at the heart of this transformation. It is time for all stakeholders to embrace not just STEM, but also a broader, interdisciplinary education model that includes creativity, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. We must ask ourselves critical questions: Are we equipping learners with future-relevant skills? Are we encouraging them to go beyond consuming technology to creating solutions for our specific problems? And most importantly, how can we ensure no learner is left behind in this race toward a tech-driven future? These are the guiding principles that should inform our education reform efforts.
