    Co-Founder BeyondNetZero | Entrepreneur, Sustainability

It was a pleasure to speak at the One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds summit in Riyadh this week. Where the General Atlantic climate fund BeyondNetZero is a member. I spoke about the need to use AI to better collect process and predict datasets needed for transition. Collectively we can continue to progress towards Net Zero albeit we have some significant ground to cover. My notes are listed here : How Will AI Help Us Achieve These Goals? * Transforming the Investment Process: * AI enhances operational efficiency, improves decision-making accuracy, and supports real-time insights. * Improving (Climate Related) Portfolio Management Practices: * AI-powered tools help measure, monitor, and predict climate risks and opportunities. * Three Key Applications of AI: * Measuring: * Closing data gaps by processing structured and unstructured data.Examples: Using IoT data and AI, investors can track real-time emissions data from portfolio companies or supply chains. AI can reconcile inconsistent ESG data across sources, ensuring comparability and accuracy in climate-related reporting. Collaborative data platforms like the Net Zero Public Data Utility (NZPDU) benefit from AI's ability to harmonize and analyze metrics at scale. AI automates emissions verification processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks like FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) or International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) * Streamlining emissions calculations at the asset level, reducing reliance on overstretched ESG teams. * Monitoring: * Enabling real-time tracking of emissions, enhancing transparency for portfolio companies. * AI-driven insights improve compliance and decision-making. Example: AI-powered platforms can create dynamic dashboards to visualize progress on net-zero targets at portfolio or asset levels. * Predicting: * Leveraging better climate models to identify risks and inform strategies. AI-driven scenario analysis allows investors to assess how changes in carbon pricing, regulatory shifts, or physical climate risks may impact portfolios. * Better Climate Models for Risk Management. AI enhances predictive modeling, helping investors understand potential risks and opportunities across various climate scenarios. * Ensuring AI’s Effectiveness: * High-quality, reliable data is foundational. Collaborating on data partnerships and adopting standardized ESG metrics will enhance AI’s ability to drive impactful outcomes.

  • “The winners are going to be places that stress and achieve investment excellence at scale, that have good cultures, that don’t compromise on doing the right thing, and that understand that doing deals isn’t a zero-sum game. All boats should rise in a partnership, and that’s the attitude with which we approach our companies, our capital partners and the communities in which we operate.” Gordon Cruess, Managing Director, Global Transactions and Associate General Counsel at General Atlantic, reflects on the evolution of the PE transaction landscape and shares career insights for young professionals in a recent Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP Alumni Spotlight interview.
