The American School in Japan, Tokyo’s leading international school, has developed a bold new academic mission that seeks to build a community of inquisitive learners and independent thinkers. Ennead has created a master plan that aligns the campus with this ambitious vision. Conceived as a “River of Learning,” our master plan for ASIJ reshapes the campus with a sinuous form that weaves through the property, uniting all school divisions into a singular, continuous structure. On November 22, 2024, Ennead celebrated a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of our Shanghai office. Clients, friends, local design institutes, consultants, and vendors joined our team in Shanghai to mark the past decade. Since it opened in 2014 the staff has grown from three people to 22 talented and dynamic individuals. Collaboration between our teams in Shanghai and the U.S. has helped us deliver exceptional results for our clients. The synergy between the Shanghai, New York, and Los Angeles teams exemplifies our commitment to leveraging global expertise to meet local needs. As we celebrate this milestone, we also look forward to the future. The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design has recognized two Ennead projects with American Architecture Awards. The American Architecture Awards are the nation’s highest and most prestigious distinguished building awards program, honoring new and cutting-edge designs in the United States. Condé Nast Traveller featured Ennead's award-winning design for the Yangtze River Estuary Chinese Sturgeon Nature Preserve in a recent article about biophilic design in Shanghai. "Are trees making Shanghai a smarter city?" explores the rising trend of green spaces in the city, and how they benefit the populace. Traveller spoke with Ennead Partner Thomas Wong about the movement: “'Greener cities reconnect us to our innate attachment to other biological life, as well as act as a stark reminder that the future of all life relies on a better balance between the human construct and the natural world,' says Thomas J Wong of New York-based Ennead Architects, a designer with a role in Shanghai’s organic-design revolution. 'Even though I already consider Shanghai a garden city, more nature in urban environments has enormous benefits in providing comfort, well-being and enjoyment for people, but also by better integrating the built environment with our planet’s ecosphere.'" Traditional Building Magazine published an article on the renewal of the copper dome at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The piece covers the dome's history and the process our team went through to find the best long-term solution. “'The membrane roofs on the dome kept failing rapidly because of water infiltration,' says Kevin Seymour, associate principal of Ennead Architects, which had been doing work on the cathedral since the 1970s and did an initial repair on the dome roof in 2014. 'Because the cathedral is so massive, it’s expensive even to access the dome roof.
