Did you know reducing methane emissions is key to tackling the worst impacts of climate change? Methane traps over 80x more heat than CO₂ in the short term, making measures to mitigate its emissions among the biggest levers we have to stave off irreversible warming. Here’s a game-changing solution: repurposing inedible food waste into clean energy via #biogas or #RNG at existing wastewater treatment plants! This innovative approach delivers a rare triple win: - Reduces methane emissions from landfills - Produces renewable energy locally - Helps cities meet climate and sustainability goals This win-win non-partisan strategy aligns with city, state, federal and international policy goals —proving that urban climate-smart solutions that leverage critical infrastructure can unite otherwise diverse priorities. Could your city lead the way in adopting this cutting-edge strategy? Anaerobic digestion #AD and renewable natural gas #RNG are climbing the US climate policy agenda. They offer a rapid path to lowering methane emissions from agriculture, food waste, and landfills, all of which are major sources, and urgently need redressing along with the oil and gas sector in order to meet emissions goals. Energy Vision has found the EPA's new rules for oil and gas infrastructure could cut methane emissions 17.5% by 2030, while AD/RNG could cut another 13.6% if rapidly scaled. Together, these critical strategies can enable the US to meet and exceed the Global Methane Pledge target of cutting methane 30% by 2030. For more on what this could mean for US policy, see the new video and other documentation of Energy Vision’s September 20 Congressional briefing on leveraging AD/RNG to cut methane emissions, posted here [https://lnkd.in/gPJSXCmE]. It features Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA 21), Senior Advisor in the Office of the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Dr. Ilissa Ocko, Generate Upcycle’s Suzanne Hunt, Kevin Abernathy of the Milk Producers Council, and Energy Vision’s Matt Tomich and Joanna Underwood. Ratcheting down #methane is the best lever we have to limit warming by mid-century. The primary focus of the briefing was on the potential of ramping up AD/RNG and steps Congress can take to help accelerate it. Energy Vision’s recent report “Meeting the Methane Challenge” [https://lnkd.in/gieMNZXS] is another resource for policymakers. It has detailed analysis of the feasibility, costs, timing, and impacts of building AD/RNG infrastructure. Michael S. A great success on the Hill as Energy Vision led a briefing informing leaders and future leaders about what Congress needs to know about major methane emission sources beyond oil and gas, and how to leverage them for clean energy/climate benefits and to meet our 2030 goals. The session featured: Congressman Jim Costa, representative for California's 21st congressional district, Dr. Ilissa Ocko, Senior Advisor, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Matt Tomich, President, Energy Vision, Suzanne Hunt, VP for Policy, Generate UpCycle and Kevin Abernathy, General Manager, Milk Producers Council. Video coming soon. Keep tuned!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: US Leadership on Methane Abatement: What Congress Needs to Know About Major Methane Emissions Sources Beyond Oil and Gas, and How to Leverage Them for Clean Energy/Climate Benefits and to Meet Our 2030 Goals Friday, September 20, 2024, 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM EST. Space is limited! Also streamed live via Zoom. RSVP Here for in person or virtual: https://lnkd.in/gwEuBtgp Join us with leading experts on methane abatement, addressing how the US can cut major methane emissions from sources other than the oil and gas sector, especially from agriculture and landfills, to help meet GHG emissions goals. The briefing is organized by the clean energy solutions NGO Energy Vision and co-sponsored by Rep. Jim Costa of California’s 21st District. The EPA calls methane a “climate super pollutant.” Nearly 90 times more potent a warming agent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, methane has already caused about a third of modern warming. Lowering atmospheric methane concentrations is the most powerful lever we have to limit global temperature rise in the next few decades. In 2021 the US spearheaded the Global Methane Pledge which over 150 countries have signed, promising to cut methane emissions at least 30% by 2030. The top three sources of US methane emissions are agriculture, the oil and gas sector, and landfills. EPA has issued new rules to cut methane from the oil and gas sector, which if fully implemented would cut US methane emissions 17.5% by 2030. Meanwhile, agriculture and landfills represent big, as yet unleveraged opportunities to cut methane emissions using proven, ready-to-scale anaerobic digester (AD) technology. Building ADs are a very cost-effective way to cut US methane emissions by another 13.6%. Together with the 17.5% reduction from the oil and gas sector, ADs can help the US meet and exceed the 30% by 2030 target, which will help limit global temperature rise and avoid climate tipping points. ADs avoid direct methane emissions from decomposing organic wastes by physically capturing the methane biogases they generate and using them to produce a net carbon-negative fuel called renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG can be used to displace carbon-intensive fossil fuels or to generate renewable electricity, further reducing GHG emissions. It’s a two-pronged, cost-effective strategy, slashing GHGs while providing an additional income stream for farmers. Briefers will include Congressman Costa (invited), Ilissa Ocko, Senior Advisor, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Matt Tomich, president of Energy Vision, and Kevin Abernathy, Milk Producers Council. Energy Vision just released the first clear roadmap for how the U.S. can reach “30x30” — the international goal of cutting methane emissions at least 30% by 2030. This is our best shot at slowing global warming since methane is such a potent greenhouse gas. In our new report Meeting the Methane Challenge, we found that if EPA’s new oil and gas production rules are fully complied with, that would take 17.5% off U.S. methane emissions. But where will the rest come from? We calculated that building about 4,700 anaerobic digesters to process food waste and manure would cut U.S. methane 13.6%. Together the two strategies can get us to 30x30 and beyond! https://lnkd.in/eAH2PwKe
