🚀 Emporia Employee Spotlight We’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Emma Raszmann, a passionate and innovative member of the Emporia engineering team. 🎓 From Biomedical Dreams to Power Electronics “I originally wanted to study biomedical engineering,” Emma shares, recalling a pivotal 30-minute talk during her time at the University of Pittsburgh. “A professor’s overview of electrical engineering changed my mind. The wide range of applications and the problem-solving involved really excited me.” Her hands-on journey began with co-op experiences at Eaton Corporation, where she explored power management technologies, and undergraduate research with a power electronics group. “I had a Ph.D. student mentor who just threw me into it. I loved the constant problem-solving and how much it relies on electrical engineering fundamentals—it kept my brain moving. Once I experienced power electronics, I was hooked.” ⚡ Driving Sustainable Innovation “This job ties everything together for me. I’m excited to be part of an evolving industry and to apply the skills I gained as a graduate student in power electronics.” Her current focus? Bi-directional charging, a technology poised to revolutionize energy management. “Our grid is aging, but bi-directional charging helps destress it during peak demand by letting homeowners use their car batteries to support the grid. It’s exciting to imagine customers directly exchanging energy with the grid—and even make money doing it.” 💡 Wisdom for Women in Engineering “The hardest part is not seeing others who look like me, which sometimes makes you question if you belong in the room.  If you love what you’re doing, you belong—and this company has made me feel that way every day.” Her advice? “Fail forward.” “You may not be great at first, but do it anyway. Learn from your mistakes, be honest about what you don’t know, and keep growing.” 🤝 Building a Collaborative Culture Working at a smaller company like Emporia has been refreshing for Emma. “I love the ownership I have over my contributions and the tight-knit community we’ve built here. We care about each other’s success—it’s an amazing feeling to work with such a collaborative team.” She credits her success to staying open to feedback: “Half the battle in engineering is how well you work with others. Being open-minded and receptive to feedback helps me be the best team player I can be.” ⛷️ Life Beyond the Lab When she’s not solving engineering challenges, you’ll find Emma snowboarding on Colorado’s slopes, cycling, or diving into a good book. “Living here is a treat. It’s the perfect place to recharge and enjoy my hobbies.” 🌍 A Legacy of Learning and Innovation “I don’t often think about legacy,” Emma admits, “but I hope to inspire others with my passion for learning. At Emporia, I get to grow every day, and that’s what excites me the most.” #EmporiaEnergy #EmployeeSpotlight #SustainableTech #WomenInEngineering #Innovation

  • Employee Spotlight - Dirk Long, VP of Energy Storage at Emporia Energy shares how his off-grid upbringing inspired his passion for renewable energy and shaped his career. Q: How did growing up off-grid influence your perspective on energy? “In the late 90s, my family moved to off-grid land in Washington and built a home powered by a gas generator, lead-acid batteries, and later, solar and wind systems. We learned to value reliability, resilience, and sustainability. Managing energy sources and storing power when needed became second nature. Fast forward, I moved to Colorado, worked at NREL, and applied those lessons to EV and grid battery systems.” Q: Tell us about the solar and battery system you helped install at your family home. “For less than my parents spent on past systems, they now have a 14.8 kW solar array, a 40 kWh battery, and a generator-integrated inverter. Even during cloudy weeks, it performs reliably. Excess solar can even power an EV, replacing the $35 diesel trips to town with free energy. The Emporia monitoring system revolutionized their energy management—no more manual calculations, just real-time insights.” Q: What led you to Emporia?  “I started at NREL, advancing battery tech for EVs and the grid. While research was fulfilling, I craved hands-on impact and shifted to industries like aerospace and automotive. By 2017, I returned to grid storage, where distributed energy storage became pivotal for grid stability. What I learned on a micro-grid was needed at a national level. Emporia’s mission—batteries, distributed energy, bidirectional EV charging—perfectly aligned with my passions.” Q: What excites you about Emporia’s mission?  “Emporia makes energy management accessible for homeowners, solving real-world problems. Electrification of cars and homes centralizes energy use, making optimization essential. We’re simplifying this for users, helping them navigate the energy transition.” Q: What excites you about the future of energy?  “Technologies like bidirectional EV charging and grid-edge batteries are now mainstream. Emporia is leading the charge, creating accessible, intuitive solutions for individual homes and the grid. It’s thrilling to be part of such transformation.” Q: What would you say to someone considering a career at Emporia?  “Emporia is fast-paced, mission-driven, and focused on impactful solutions. We’re at the intersection of hardware, software, and customer experience, building technology that touches lives. If you’re passionate about making a difference, Emporia is the place to be.”Dirk Long’s journey exemplifies how personal experience fuels professional impact. At Emporia, he’s shaping the future of energy with innovation and purpose.
