We hosted WSU’s summer architecture studio at EHDD Seattle this year! The students tackled an ambitious and timely challenge: reimagining the Lid I-5 project in downtown Seattle. This studio explored how freeway lids could stitch together neighborhoods divided by infrastructure, creating opportunities for new parks, affordable housing, and civic spaces. EHDD Principal Christopher Patano, who has been deeply involved in efforts to lid I-5, described this as “the most valuable real estate between Vancouver, BC, and San Francisco.” The studio pushed students to think about the post-COVID city—not just as a place of work, but as a space for connection, play, and community healing. “The class left feeling intellectually and emotionally rewarded, and so did all of us at EHDD,” Chris reflected. It was a privilege to engage with the next generation of architects and support their creative exploration of this transformative vision for Seattle’s future. #Architecture #UrbanDesign #LidI5 #Seattle #WSU #EHDD

We’re thrilled to share that one of EHDD’s talented Designers, Yining Ma, and her teammate Minghao Xu, have been honored with an AIA East Bay 2024 Design Award in the Student category! Their project, Seasonal Institute of Fire, reimagines how architecture can harmonize human activities with the rhythms of wildfire-prone landscapes in California. Drawing inspiration from Charles and Ray Eames, the project emphasizes flexibility, resilience, and a sustainable relationship between people and nature. Jury’s Comments: “This project is a beautiful architectural response to reconsider the relationship with the natural process. The entry impresses on many levels: the exploration of space, tectonics, and its compelling diagrams and illustration.” Yining shared: “This project is a proud moment that motivates future impactful work. Working alongside my teammate Minghao in a supportive studio allowed us to explore meaningful design strategies addressing wildfire resilience. It embodies our commitment to bridging architecture and nature, creating sustainable solutions that respond to real-world challenges.” We’re so proud of Yining for her dedication to impactful, meaningful design that addresses real-world challenges. Today we are proud to announce the spinout of C.Scale from EHDD! C.Scale and its breakthrough machine learning carbon data models and tools, originally developed at EHDD and used by over 5,000 designers through the open access app EPIC, is now better positioned to revolutionize the building industry's approach to decarbonization. "This spinoff demonstrates the power of combining architectural expertise with cutting-edge technology," said EHDD CEO Jennifer Devlin Herbert. "C.Scale is a success story of how innovation within architecture firms can catalyze industry-wide transformation. We're proud to have incubated a solution that will accelerate our profession's response to climate change.” We wish co-founders Jack Rusk and Brad Jacobson, FAIA godspeed!
