Edmentum reposted this
It was an honor to join some of my distinguished colleagues (thank you Erin Mote!) in the edtech industry for a discussion with the Department of Education, White House, and many other impressive members of our education community, all centered on the urgent issue of chronic absenteeism. We are committed to partnering across our education ecosystem to improve continuity of data, and we are honored to expand our work with #ProjectUnicorn to focus on student attendance data. For our part, Edmentum has been supporting districts to address absenteeism from a variety of angles. Some areas in which we’re seeing clear evidence of impact, along with high potential for continued transformation, include: • Flexible online curriculum for *both* original credit and credit recovery ― Our study covering grades 8-12 in Clover, SC showed a 23% reduction in absences and 33% reduction in tardies among students who completed at least one Courseware course. These statistically significant findings illustrate what’s possible when we meet students where they are and use technology effectively to provide the high-quality courses they need. (and their overall grades improved, too). You can see our research here: http://bit.ly/4iHJHoa • Career-connected learning for ALL ― State after state across the U.S. has issued a clear call for a new age of CTE/career-connected learning. We’ve aligned our CCL catalog to the career pathways students want and the economy of the future demands, so our district partners feel confident they never have to say “no” to any student’s dreams. When kids see the authentic relevance of their schooling, they stay engaged, enrolled, and on track for graduation. • Virtual teaching and tutoring ― Relationships are at the heart of student engagement, particularly among secondary learners. Our instructional services can free up teachers’ time to focus on connecting with students and also provide virtual teachers and tutors who can develop their own connections with learners. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who shared their practical insights and ideas this week.
I have long believed that the #edtech industry is committed to doing well and doing good. In fact, it is the ethos of InnovateEDU that we must create support for both the supply (edtech) and demand (states and districts) sides of the edtech data ecosystem to build partnerships and solve the real challenges that schools face. It was the origin story of our first alliance Project Unicorn and continues to guide our work in all of our alliances and partnerships. We build tables for these data and practice conversations to come togethe Nothing was more evident yesterday as a group of us gathered in Washington DC at a TABLE at the The White House with colleagues from across academia, networks of schools and principals, non-profit organizations who have stewarded engagement in state communities and in data all sat around a table to talk about not just the problem but the solution. And do you know who was there - the edtech industry - talking about the need to provide this data to schools, districts, and states in an aligned and standardized format, grounded in making data actionable and focused on meeting the needs of the field. Thank you to PowerSchool, Clever Inc., Edmentum, ClassLink for joining me for the launch of Every Day Counts, a collaboration between Project Unicorn and the National Partnership for Student Success Support Hub at the Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University, where several education technology companies have committed to developing new data features aligned to data standards within their platforms at no additional cost that help schools and districts reduce chronic absence by enabling them to identify struggling students, engage families, and foster a supportive learning environment. Jamie Candee and Amanda Kocon, Ryan Imbriale and Hardeep Gulati, and Trish Sparks and Jeff Carlson as well as Berj Akian and Patrick Devanney are leaders who this sector can be proud of - not just because they lead on tech but because they lead with impact and ultimately supporting educators, students and families at the center of the work. Also I couldn't not mention Maureen Wentworth and Sean Casey who are such exceptional leaders in this space about creating and building common ground. Want to join this effort? Project Unicorn announced the launch of a working group for education technology vendors, education standards bodies, districts, educators, parents, and other key stakeholders to provide input on the future design of these solutions and data schema. https://lnkd.in/e4pVErsF

While credit recovery programs are critical to keeping students on track for graduation, the ultimate goal should be to shrink these programs over time. So how can schools proactively address credit recovery needs before students fall behind? Here’s where to start: ✅ Identify why students are failing early ✅ Provide targeted supports during regular instruction ✅ Implement benchmarks to catch learning gaps in core subjects By focusing on early intervention and root cause analysis, schools can ensure fewer students need credit recovery in the first place—and set them up for long-term success. Check out our Credit Recovery Workbook for actionable strategies: https://lnkd.in/gxMnq4Ge How is your school tackling credit recovery before it’s needed? Let us know in the comments 👇
