🎨 Our designers have a myriad of skills and creative pursuits that make Duolingo a delightful product and experience. Collin Leix is one of our Associate Creative Directors in our Detroit office. She is a painter turned animator and gave us a peek into her favorite projects, Pinterest board, and color palette. 👀 🎵 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? The redesign of how our characters show up in the Music App! It opened a door to using character's motivations in the mechanics in the app. -  We brought a character in for encouragement: they bob their head in time, acting as a metronome. - We tapped into the idea of a streak: When you get a streak of correct music notes, a flame escalates over time. The characters even cringe (and you lose the flame) when you make a mistake.  - We made it feel more like a performance on stage: we added a curtain that opens, and flowers being thrown at the end!  🤩 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳? “Hands”. It was a really special project because I took it on in a tumultuous time as I was about to have a baby. The author of the book Wicked, Gregory Maguire, is a Duolingo learner. 💚🩷 The Broadway show and movie are based on the original book he wrote. 📗 Gregory is 🧙 defying gravity 🧹with an almost 7 year streak learning French! 🇫🇷 He shared his story with us: “I had begun on Duolingo rather half-heartedly, I admit, with little conviction I could improve. When in 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic required all of us to draw back on travel, I compensated for the lack of mobility (and also I conducted self-therapy to keep from going mad with boredom) by beefing up my time and energy on Duolingo. Now, even when I go to Paris, I may not go in disguise as a Parisian, to be sure, but I rarely have to resort to English. I am conversational even among eye-raising Parisians. 👀 I am dedicated as an old mule and keep plodding ahead. 🫏 Attached are some photos of me at the premiere of Wicked in Hollywood recently and me at Monet’s house in Giverny.” One thing we love about our community is that we have all different types of learners, from famous authors to little kids! #duolingo #onlyatduolingo

They understood that just getting to and from family abroad can take up 2+ days, often leaving little time for actual visits. That's why our Winter Break is intentionally two weeks long. This allows ample opportunity for long-distance travel, ensuring that every Duo, no matter how far their family is, can choose to travel and spend a meaningful amount of time with them.
