What I’ve Learned About Personalized Outreach (and Why Most of It Fails) For years, I thought I understood personalized outreach. Like most people, I believed adding someone’s name, mentioning their company, or referencing a job posting was enough to stand out. And for a while, I convinced myself it was working. But the more I dug into the data and listened to my clients’ experiences, the clearer it became: most so-called personalized outreach doesn’t work. Here’s what I discovered: 1️⃣ It’s Too Shallow. Adding a name or generic line about their company isn’t enough. People see right through it. True personalization goes deeper—it’s about understanding what’s happening in their business, their specific pain points, and their goals. 2️⃣ It’s Often Irrelevant. Imagine sending a perfectly crafted, “personalized” message to someone whose company isn’t hiring or isn’t looking for the service you’re offering. No matter how great your message is, if it’s not relevant, it’s a waste of time. 3️⃣ It Lacks Follow-Up. This one stung the most. I realized that many of my messages (and my clients’) didn’t fail because they weren’t good—they failed because they weren’t consistent. Outreach isn’t a one-and-done game. Most of the magic happens after the third or fourth touchpoint. So, what’s the solution? Here’s what I’ve figured out: Relevance is King. You need to know what’s going on in their world right now. Are they hiring? Did they just receive funding? Is there a big leadership change? These signals tell you when and how to approach them. Targeted Personalization at Scale. The key is combining relevance with personalization that feels authentic. Using tools and automation the right way can make your outreach feel like it’s coming straight from you—even when it’s scaled. Commit to the Follow-Up. This was the game-changer for me. I started seeing results not on the first or second touch but on the third, fourth, and sometimes fifth. That’s when the replies and opportunities started rolling in. One of my clients proved this to me in a big way. Using this approach—relevance, smart personalization, and consistent follow-up—they generated an insane $236,000 pipeline without a single cold call. Here’s the truth: Outreach isn’t about blasting the most messages; it’s about making the right ones count.
