We always talk about using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) methods for remediation applications. However, the HDD technology can also be used for soil sampling and monitor well completions. At this location, Ellingson-DTD crews completed two blind (single-ended) angled/directional monitor wells at a former plant site. The wells were started at an approximate 14° entry angle, traveled under a stream and terminated at the unconsolidated formation/saprolite contact. Each well was about 120’ total length with 10’ screen sections completed at about 33’ bgs. Three-inch, schedule 80 PVC was used as the screen and casing. Biopolymer drilling fluid was utilized for the drilling and well installation. Well development consisted of fresh water and enzyme flushing and jetting followed by pumping.

Another horizonal remediation well project was recently completed by Ellingson-DTD crews. The horizontal SVE wells at this site entered the ground in the parking lot and trended under a “pack & mail” store, terminating under a dry cleaner. The crew completed the work during normal business hours, the only intrusion inside the retail establishments was for borehole tracking. Three-inch, schedule 80 PVC well screen and casing were utilized for the well materials. The wells averaged 95’ in length with 30’ of screen in each well. The formation at the site was mostly silty sand. Because the wells are completed above the water table, biopolymer drilling fluid was utilized for the drilling and well installation.
