Congratulations to the four companies who have received a GAIN nuclear energy voucher ⚡ ⚛️ Curio LV will partner with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to analyze NuCycle, Curio’s process for recycling spent nuclear fuel. ⚛️ Deep Fission will collaborate with Idaho National Laboratory to develop a RELAP5-3D model of Deep Fission’s reactor design to evaluate its thermal hydraulics. ⚛️ Kairos Power will work with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to refine measurement methods used to monitor the chemistry of its reactor’s salt coolant. ⚛️ NuCube Energy will work with Idaho National Laboratory to receive computational analysis assistance to assess the performance and optimize the design of its reactor’s heat exchanger. This advanced nuclear waste recycling technology offers a sustainable approach to managing spent nuclear fuel, transforming it into reusable materials and reducing the long-term environmental impact. Key Developments: 1. U.S. Imports of Enriched Uranium from China: The United States has been importing enriched uranium products (EUP) from China, with state-owned China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC) supplying these materials to U.S. nuclear fuel customers. This arrangement leverages discounted Russian EUP, allowing CNNC to secure long-term contracts. 2. TerraPower's HALEU Enrichment Facility in South Africa: TerraPower has announced plans to establish a high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) enrichment facility in South Africa, in partnership with ASP Isotopes. This initiative aims to support the startup of TerraPower's advanced reactors, which depend on a stable HALEU supply. 3. Russia's Nuclear Waste Agreement with South Africa: Russia's state nuclear company, Rosatom, has entered into an agreement with a South African nuclear company focused on decommissioning and radioactive waste management. This partnership outlines plans for collaborative efforts in scientific, technical, and commercial activities related to the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and other facilities that pose nuclear and radiation hazards. Implications: These developments highlight a growing dependence on foreign entities for critical components of the nuclear fuel cycle in the United States, this raises our concerns about national security and energy independence. Relying on external sources for enriched uranium and related services exposes the U.S. to geopolitical risks and potential supply chain disruptions. The Role of NuCycle™: Curio's NuCycle™ process presents a viable solution to these challenges by: Reducing Dependence on Foreign Sources: By recycling spent nuclear fuel domestically, NuCycle™ can diminish the need for imported enriched uranium, thereby enhancing national energy security. Promoting Environmental Sustainability: NuCycle™ transforms nuclear waste into reusable materials, reducing the environmental impact associated with long-term storage and disposal. Supporting Advanced Reactor Technologies: The process produces fuel suitable for advanced reactors, aligning with initiatives like TerraPower's, which require a reliable supply of high-assay low-enriched uranium. Conclusion: Integrating innovative recycling technologies such as NuCycle™ into the U.S. nuclear energy strategy is essential for achieving energy independence, enhancing national security, and promoting environmental sustainability.
