Did you know EarthCARE, which was a joint mission between JAXA and the ESA, was nicknamed “Hakuryu” which means “White Dragon” in Japanese? The construction of EarthCare seemed to align well with the shape of the mythological animal and with its ability to govern water and fly in the sky. To continue to build on this experience, JAXA decided to sonify the data received from EarthCARE using the sound of the koto (Japanese harp) and the traditional Japanese pentatonic scale. By creating a sonification experience, JAXA continues to work on finding alternative techniques to analyzing the data that could potentially be applicable to different fields. Today we celebrate the achievements of CloudSat, a NASA Earth observation satellite that far exceeded its planned 22-month mission and provided groundbreaking insights into clouds and atmospheric behavior for nearly 18 years. CPI is honored to have contributed to the mission by supplying EIKs that supported CloudSat's radar capabilities, for which our employees received a NASA Public Service Group Achievement Award. We are thankful to NASA, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and CloudSat for pushing the boundaries and advancing our understanding of Earth's atmosphere. Earlier this year, the Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite launched with a mission to improve our understanding of how the interactions of clouds, radiation and aerosols affect climate change. One of EarthCARE’s instruments is a Doppler Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR), developed by JAXA and NICT, that uses 94 GHz Extended Interaction Klystrons (EIKs) provided by CPI Canada. EIKs are a compact, reliable source of RF power across the millimeter-wave spectrum and are the key enabling technology for space based cloud-profiling, and other earth observation radars that improve weather and climate prediction. Space EIKs have been produced at C-, Ka-, and W-band, demonstrating the scalability of the technology, which could be further extended across the EIK performance range.
