Happy to be listed as a collaborator with Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health as our system's use expands to Philly! The GRANND (Grasp-Release Assessment of a Networked Neuroprosthesis Device) study conducted by The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) and Case Western Reserve University is expanding to its second clinical center to explore restoration of hand function after cervical SCI using functional electrical stimulation. https://lnkd.in/eQi82KJ3 Note: The COSMIIC System is the soon-to-be fully open source version of the Networked Neuroprosthesis, which is being used under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE).

Big congrats to Nathan Makowski who has received a 4-yr, $3.9 million award for "Enhancing walking and independence after incomplete SCI with a fully implanted neuroprosthesis." The study will use the base components of the COSMIIC System and adapt existing software to coordinate standing and walking for implanted participants! Mike is not a patient... he and his support system are team members. They offer invaluable feedback (and practice a lot of patience) so that we can grow this technology together. Last month, our clinical group held a party at The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of continuous use of an implanted neuroprosthetic device. More importantly, we were able to toast the wonderful people at the root of it all: the original design and clinical teams and the inspiring participant-pioneer Jeanette. 30 years is quite a time for a device to be in the body and functional on a daily basis, and the effort required for that is not to be understated. We are passionate about sustaining legacy implantable tech for participant/patients and, inversely, the effects of device abandonment.
