Yesterday in the Northern Hemisphere we experienced the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and official start to winter. Columbus-born painter George Bellows was dedicated to depicting the beauty of this season—in 1914, he remarked that “One must always paint the snow at least once a year.” In this work from CMA’s collection, he portrays the then-working-class neighborhood of Battery Park, Manhattan, blanketed in blue and soft snow. George Bellows, Blue Snow, The Battery, 1910. Oil on canvas. Museum Purchase, Howald Fund.
About us
Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

Helen Frankenthaler was #BornThisDay, December 12, 1928. This abstract painting, currently on view in the Upper Level Walter Wing, exemplifies Color Field painting, a subset of Abstract Expressionism in which Frankenthaler was a leading figure. To create this work, she washed diluted acrylic paint over her canvas in a method of application that rejected traditional painting techniques as well as the use of brushes and other tools. The paint flowed freely, resulting in large areas stained with color while others were left untouched. Explore “Captain's Paradise” alongside other fresh additions in the Upper Level Walter Wing tonight during CMA After Hours. Open late every Thursday, this weekly event offers $5 general admission from 5:00–9:00 PM. Stroll through the galleries, enjoy dinner and drinks at Schokko Café, shop for holiday gifts in the Museum Store, and create art-filled memories. Helen Frankenthaler, Captain's Paradise, 1971. Acrylic on canvas. Museum Purchase with the aid of funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and two anonymous donors

Have you experienced "Fragments of Epic Memory" yet? Plan your visit before it closes on January 26. This exhibition is anchored by a selection of over 100 photographs from the Art Gallery of Ontario Montgomery Collection of Caribbean Photographs. Dating from the early 19th century and produced largely by European and American photographers, these images document the aftermath of emancipation, a period that coincided with the invention and rise of the photographic medium. Surrounding this photographic archive are paintings, photographs, video projections, and other works by Caribbean artists from the 1960s to the present, offering a capsule survey of contemporary Caribbean art with an emphasis on recent production. This juxtaposition reveals the ongoing process towards liberation and world-building across the region and the reverberation of historical legacies around the globe, offering a multigenerational and multicentric presentation. This Friday is the launch of Prologue at Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti (632 Park Street)! Be part of this exciting new program featuring events and installations that reactivate CMA’s satellite location in the Short North. Mark your calendar for December 13 and celebrate with us at the launch party from 6:30–10:00 PM. From 1923 to 2011, The Pizzuti building was home to the national headquarters of the Order of United Commercial Travelers of America (UCT), a fraternal society and insurance provider for traveling salespeople. Taking the now-defunct society's history as a starting point, Prologue presents a series of public conversations, pop-up installations, and performances that illuminate the role of artists as persuasion agents, interlopers, and communal aid-givers. The launch party starts at 7:00 PM with a conversation between Prologue curator Daniel Marcus and fraternal archivist Heather K. Calloway (doors open 6:30 PM). From 8:00–10:00 PM, the afterparty kicks off with Errant Forms X Nesting, a DJ series curated by Love Higher (Reg Zehner), featuring Chris McKee and tonedeft. Cash bar provided by Watershed Distillery Admission is free with registration. Prologue is presented with generous support from The Ohio State University Office of Academic Affairs.
