Increasing the social, economic, and civic mobility of Americans through accessible higher education #CollegePromise.
About us
College Promise is a national, non-partisan initiative to build broad public support for funding the first two years of higher education for hard-working students. We want the first two years of college to become as universal, free, and accessible as high school has been for nearly a century! While this is a national movement, local communities and states are leading the way to create College Promise programs, which cover tuition and fees leading to a community college degree or occupational certificate. Our Campaign encourages visionary leaders throughout our nation to use their ingenuity and persistence to put the College Promise in place, enabling students to complete their college degrees and certificates without the burden of unmanageable debt.

"In a world where lifetime earnings are directly tied to education levels, it’s imperative we give all students this opportunity rather than just the privileged, affluent few. It’s philanthropy that must fill in the gaps." - Martha Kanter, College Promise, RPA Sponsored Project College Promise has changed the trajectory for millions of families as it funds college education for those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Growing up, my stepdad often told me, "Hang around people smarter than you so you can learn from them." It's so true. I've realized the older I get, the more I have to learn. This past semester, I had the privilege of learning and interning with STRATA9 and College Promise under Dr. John Barnshaw's leadership. Truth be told, I wanted to intern in big tech but the minute I met John, I knew this was the perfect placement for me. John is wicked smart, and he's also kind, relatable, and a fantastic teacher and storyteller. It might sound weird that I would say storyteller but so much of what we worked on was data and through my work with him, I learned how powerful data can be used to tell a story. Over the past 20 years, the average tuition and fees have increased by 65% for private nonprofit colleges, 110% for public four-year colleges, and 49% for public two-year colleges. With skyrocketing costs, college is becoming unattainable but College Promise is a national campaign and nonprofit bipartisan organization that aims to make college more accessible and affordable by making college FREE. When I first heard of this, I thought no way but it's true. There are around 450 Promise Programs in the United States. Believe me, I sifted through the data reviewing each program one-by-one. 🤣 Every time I identified a new College Promise Program to include in the My Promise Tool database, I was excited because that meant folks would have access to free college, and you know how much my first-gen heart values education! Last week, I shared my work with my Department Chair Todd Cherner at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill along with my peers in the Master of Arts in Educational Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship end-of-semester internship presentations. John and I had been working together virtually so it was our first time meeting in person. John, I am grateful for your leadership and for investing in me this past semester. I learned so much from you and look forward to maintaining the relationship and advocating for College Promise Programs nationally. And for the rest of you, I'm passing along the advice my stepdad gave me: Hang around people smarter than you. You'll always learn more and be better for it. #Tarheels #HigherEducation #EducationalInnovation

Great example of innovative work taking place to accelerate career and economic mobility. Not surprising it's from the Baldrige winning team at Alamo Colleges District. Great leaders like Mike Flores continue to lead the way by building strong/competent teams that deeply care about their students. #College #Career #Community #CollegePromise
When we build hiring pathways from higher education institutions to employers, graduates are finding successful, fulfilling careers. A pilot program between Alamo Colleges District and EY helped students with an associate degree secure high-paying jobs while meeting staffing needs. Since 2022, the district has helped more than 90 associate degree graduates fill job vacancies at EY. The partnership began after EY struggled to hire bachelor’s degree holders in the region.
