Charlie excels at translating nuggets of insight into delightful consumer experiences that drive product results. We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring his experience to Claimers. Yesterday, we launched Claim at The Ohio State University. Today, we'll cross our first 1,000 Buckeye users. Shoutout to our incredible growth team (Caroline Jung, Namirah Q., and Jean Pan) for building an incredible growth engine that's helping us take over campuses across the country 📈. More on that topic another day but for now, I'm more fired up about back-to-school than any year I was a student!

Gen Z was supposed to kill movie theaters. Our data tells a different story. Our analysis from thousands of Claim users says they're seeing more movies in theaters than ever since "Barbenheimer" last summer. I wrote about how theater chains like AMC Theatres are drawing Gen Z back for films like Challengers and Inside Out 2.

    Head of Marketing & Partnerships @ Claim | Ex-Warriors, 49ers | Investor & Advisor | 📝 I write about Gen Z culture & marketing

🎬 Blockbuster Season is here and Gen Zers on Claim are back in theaters. Four takeaways on how AMC has capitalized post-"Barbenheimer": 1. 💖 💣 The “Barbenheimer” effect is real: 𝗔𝗠𝗖 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟰𝟭% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅. Our index blends Claim users’ total transactions, average spend, and brand penetration to compare brands. Interestingly, AMC's competitors are largely flat year-over-year despite nearly identical film lineups. This rise defies the ~87% drop in their share price in public markets during this time, but some things are working:     2. 🎟️ Value & loyalty wins: 𝗔𝗠𝗖 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀. They have clearly focused on rewarding loyalty with value - a key selling point for Gen Z. Much like an airline, AMC’s Stubs subscription offering gives subscribers perks like 12 movies per month, free concession upgrades, and programs like Discount Tuesdays.     3. 🎤 New experiences driving visits: Another reason Gen Z keeps coming back is 𝗔𝗠𝗖'𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀. For example, it was the exclusive distributor of Gen Z royalty Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film last October, setting single-day box office records. It also saw success with Billie Eilish’s album listening event in May.     4. 🍿 Collectibles: Finally, AMC has led the pack on an unexpected hit among Gen Z: collectible popcorn vessels. Dune 2’s release was accompanied by the viral Sandworm popcorn buckets that were joked about on SNL while Barbie’s launch featured 25,000 sold-out special edition pink Corvettes sold at $34.99 a pop. It’s a smart approach and a proven tactic: 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝘂𝗺, 𝗯𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 - 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀? On a personal note, Sony recently acquired my regular theater chain, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, in a bid to continue its own unique experiential suite of offerings. I love Alamo’s artful quirks and sit-down dinner experience in-theater, plus its focus on community. I’m excited to see how these chains can continue to learn from one another and keep the moviegoing experience enduring and innovative. 🔍 What did I miss? How will AMC's competitors respond? 📊 Follow me for more insights on Gen Z culture and spending habits. 📈 Marketers, if you’re interested in how Claim can help your business reach college students and Gen Z across the country, let’s chat.
