City of Billings Mayor Bill Cole is seeking applications for the Ward III council seat held by Denise Joy, who was selected to serve in the Montana State Legislature. Applications should be submitted before January 13, 2025, although the mayor reserves the right to consider any application regardless of submittal date. Mayor Cole’s recommendation from the field of candidates must be approved by the city council. Candidates must be residents of Ward III and qualified voters of the City of Billings. The appointed person will serve the remainder of Joy’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2025. To continue serving, the successful appointee must win the election for a four-year term that will be held in November 2025. Ward III generally covers neighborhoods south of the BBWA canal between 19th Street West and 4th Street West, including the area south of Central Avenue between South 24th Street West and Hallowell Lane. Ward boundaries can be seen in better detail on the ward map available on the City website (BillingsMT.gov/ElectionMap). Anyone interested can apply by sending a letter of interest, resume and letters of recommendation, if desired, to Executive Secretary Wynette Maddox via email. Materials can also be mailed to the Mayor’s Office, Billings City Hall, PO Box 1178, Billings MT 59103-1178. (Visit BillingsMT.gov/WardIII2025 for email address) The letter of interest should state the applicant’s qualifications for the position, an explanation of why the applicant would like to be appointed to City Council, the length of the applicant’s residency in Billings and the state of Montana, and whether there are any personal or financial conflicts that could interfere with the applicant’s role as a councilmember. Councilmember Joy began serving residents of Ward III in 2017 and she was elected to her second term in 2021. The City and Mayor Cole would like to thank Councilmember Joy for her commitment to Billings, its residents, and her additional time spent on the City Council’s Legislative and Local Affairs Committee.

Join us in giving a warm welcome to Billings' newest firefighters! All 11 recruits successfully completed the Billings Fire Department's intensive 14-week academy. They capped off their achievement on Friday with a graduation ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Their first day on the job was Monday and they'll work as probationary firefighters over the next three months. This year’s academy included a recruit from Lockwood Rural Fire District #8, who trained alongside Billings Fire Fighters through a special partnership between the two departments. Let’s give a big round of applause to these brave individuals and thank them for their hard work, determination, and commitment to keeping our community safe! 💪🔥

An office DIVIDED! Usually, you can find City Attorney Gina Dahl and Domestic Violence Prosecutor Ben Halverson making arguments in the courtroom. But earlier today, an interview with KULR8 News resulted in a banter battle between the two. That's because - you guessed it, they attended rival schools! Who will you be rooting for this weekend? Cats? Or Griz? Watch their interview Thursday morning on Wake Up Montana as they build up to the big game!

You might notice something missing at the front doors of the Billings Police Department... The Mavity Law Enforcement Memorial has stood at those front doors since 1992, dedicated in honor of Det. Alex Mavity who was killed in the line of duty on February 14, 1989. But not to worry, the memorial is coming with us and will be relocated to the new City Hall. For now, it's in good hands at Billings Monument Company 💙

With Halloween just over a week away, the Billings Fire Prevention Bureau wants to remind everyone that some haunted houses can be scary for more than just the spooky thrills. “The fun features involved with haunted houses are extremely dangerous in the event of a fire. Haunted houses typically create limited visibility, disorientation, and do not have the proper fire protection systems to keep occupants safe in an emergency,” said Billings Fire Marshal Jaime Fender. Haunted houses fall under fire code requirements for Special Amusement Buildings. The International Fire Code lists detailed requirements, including a fire detection system that automatically illuminates directional exit signs and a way out, stops all sound effects, and begins playing a prerecorded voice message that can be heard throughout the building, instructing patrons to proceed to the nearest exit. Just earlier this month, the New York Fire Department shut down a two-story house that was illegally converted into a haunted house, calling it a death trap. And that isn’t an overstatement. After eight teenagers died in the 1984 Haunted Castle fire, provisions were added to the fire code to prevent future tragedies. Proper permits and inspections are required to transform any indoor space into a haunted house. Those can be obtained by contacting the Billings Fire Prevention Bureau. Without these in place, haunted houses are illegal in the City of Billings. “The Billings Fire Department wants people to have fun on Halloween, but we also want them to be safe,” said Fire Marshal Fender.
