The City of Myrtle Beach has added three companies to its Living Lab program, which is an innovative public-private partnership designed to support the development of emerging technology and encourages entrepreneurs to use Myrtle Beach as their hub. The Living Lab program is part of Myrtle Beach’s Smart Cities Initiative with the goal of bringing innovative technology companies to the area to prototype and test their technologies. The Living Lab program has also led to an increase in employment in the city as companies choose to work in Myrtle Beach. Cocoflo Innovations, a company that has been in the program since August, is a member of eMYRge at the HTC Aspire Hub, where one of its employees works. The three new companies joining the Living Lab program are Civic Dollars, Liveable Cities and inCitu. These additions expand the Living Lab program’s international imprint with Ireland-based Civic Dollars and Canada-based Liveable Cities bringing the total number of foreign companies in the program to four. These companies join Rep’d, Polco, Cocoflo Innovations and dependbuild, which have been in the Living Lab program since August. Civic Dollars – Civic Dollars is an innovative platform designed to enhance the health and well-being of both residents and visitors. It incentivizes outdoor activity through the earning and redemption of Civic Dollars, which can be exchanged for rewards like discounts from local stores that partner with Civic Dollars or donations to support local causes. Liveable Cities – Liveable Cities is a division of LED Roadway Lighting Ltd., a Canadian-owned and operated clean technology company. The company focuses on smart city applications by using advanced sensors and powerful software to produce valuable, actionable insights. inCitu – inCitu brings future cities to life via augmented reality (AR) to foster collaboration around the process of urban change. They turn design and planning data into location-based, smartphone-based AR experiences, radically lowering the friction to communicate and understand projects. “This is an exciting time to be in Myrtle Beach,” Howard Waldie IV, Chief Innovation Officer for the City of Myrtle Beach said. “These companies see the value of working here, and the city believes their addition to the Living Lab program is the next step toward making Myrtle Beach a hub for technology and innovation.” #MyrtleBeach #CityofMyrtleBeach
About us
The City of Myrtle Beach is “First in Service” The City of Myrtle Beach is a full-service resort at the heart of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of natural beauty on South Carolina's northeastern coast. Our 35,000 permanent residents and millions of visitors enjoy the wide beaches, the warm weather and an incredible range of entertainment, nightlife, golf, shopping, dining and live theater. Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957, when the permanent population first topped 5,000. By the way, the name "Myrtle Beach" comes from the wax myrtle, an abundant local shrub, and was chosen in a name-the-town contest in 1900. "Edgewater" finished in second place. Previously, the area had been known as Long Bay, Withers and New Town. For nearly 50 years, Myrtle Beach was a military town, first as home to the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 1940s, and then to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base beginning in the 1950s. The base closed in 1993, and the property has since been redeveloped as the Market Common District, complete with an urban town center known as The Market Common, a Grand Park that features open space, recreation fields, a large lake and a 1.1 mile walking and bicycling trail. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well-known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. The city's staff members are dedicated to being "First in Service," and we are ready to provide assistance and answer your questions at any time. HAPPY RETIREMENT, BRENDA! 🥳 Yesterday, the City of Myrtle Beach held a retirement party for Brenda Decker, who served as Office Assistant at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center for the last 17 years. Dozens of people showed up to wish her well as she heads into this next chapter of her life. They even had a custom song made for her! Brenda says she will miss all the friends she made over the last 17 years, but she is happy to have reached this milestone in her life. The City of Myrtle Beach wishes Brenda well as she turns the page to retirement! #MyrtleBeach #CityofMyrtleBeach

Please help the City of Myrtle Beach congratulate Frankie Sluss for being this week's First in Service Friday Employee of the Week! Frankie just celebrated his 20 year anniversary at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in December. Frankie has been the Events Manager at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center since 2010. He works with clients from the moment they walk through the doors to the end of their event to ensure everything goes smoothly. Frankie also works as support staff for other team members' events. His nomination reads... "I wanted to take an opportunity to nominate Frankie Sluss for First in Service Friday. He is someone that has been with the City for a number of years and makes a big impression. His “can-do” attitude and willingness to go the extra mile for his team and for those customers he serves is outstanding. He is more than just the Events Manager. Frankie is a team player in the city and when you need something, he will try his best to make it happen. From Blessing of the Bikes, to meetings, briefings and summits, we have partnered on a lot over the years. Every year, MBPD has a big team meeting, and Frankie, goes out of his way to make it feel like a family event. Not only does he find the best location, but he also works with us and staff to ensure the event goes off without a hitch (and for over 300 employees that is hard to do!). In addition to his job, he is caring, thorough, and gives his time for his team, and wants to make a difference in our city. If you see a vibrant shirt and bright smile walking around the convention center, engaged in conversation, that is Frankie. He is well deserving of this honor. " Thank you, Frankie, for all that you do for your team and the City of Myrtle Beach. You are appreciated! #MyrtleBeach #CityofMyrtleBeach

Have you noticed the wrecked white truck across from Nance Plaza on Kings Highway? It’s a reminder of the consequences that can come from driving under the influence! This New Year's Eve, plan ahead and have a safe ride home if you are drinking. Have a sober designated driver or rideshare option available. Drunk driving endangers your life and the lives of others on the road. Myrtle Beach, Horry County and state law enforcement will be all over the Grand Strand, enforcing their "Sober or Slammer" safe driving initiative. Start the year off on the right foot by keeping it off the gas pedal after drinking. Always remember, if you see something, SAY SOMETHING!

Please help the City of Myrtle Beach congratulate Jerilynn Derhammer for being this week's First in Service Friday Employee of the Week! Jerilynn is the Mobile Library Outreach Coordinator for Chapin Memorial Library. She has worked for the City of Myrtle Beach for three years. Jerilynn spends her days out in the community, bringing library amenities to all. Her nomination reads... "I am thrilled to nominate Jerilynn Derhammer for First in Service Friday! Before our mobile library even hit the road, Jerilynn took the initiative to organize, make calls, and coordinate with the community, ensuring everything would run smoothly once the vehicle arrived. Although we had to endure a lot of "hurry up and wait" moments waiting for paperwork and tags to be finalized, Jerilynn’s persistence never wavered. And when the day finally came, she hit the ground running—now she’s out on the road 5 to 6 days a week! Jerilynn has a natural ability to connect with both staff and patrons, especially during her homebound deliveries, community events like National Night Out, back-to-school programs, adult living facility visits, and so much more—many of which she takes on without fanfare. Her dedication shines through in everything she does. Even in hot, muggy, and rainy weather she shows up for the community and does it with a smile, making sure everyone she meets feels welcomed and included. Jerilynn also goes the extra mile by bringing the mobile library to parks, festivals, recreation facilities, and support agencies, making the library experience accessible to young people whose families might not have time or transportation to visit our library building. She has a way of making everyone feel at home—whether it's parents stretched thin with responsibilities or seniors experiencing loneliness—and her efforts have made the mobile library a resounding success. Beyond her library work, Jerilynn is also passionate about animal welfare. She actively supports cat rescue efforts, working with organizations to ensure cats receive medical care and find loving homes. It’s a true pleasure to work with Jerilynn every day. Her dedication to service, both on and off the road, is inspiring. She embodies the spirit of First in Service, always striving to do her best for the city and for every person she encounters. Jerilynn, thank you for making a difference—you are truly First in Service!" Thank you, Jerilynn, for everything you do for our community. You are appreciated! #MyrtleBeach #CityofMyrtleBeach
