  • Switching from adult to pediatric care might seem daunting, but for Jodi, it was an exciting and rewarding change. As a registered technologist, she received on-the-job training that helped her not only learn pediatric protocols but also embrace new skills — like singing to her patients! “The biggest challenge was getting comfortable with being goofy and singing to help kids hold still for their tests,” she said. “Singing through a microphone with other techs, nurses, doctors and even parents around was intimidating at first, but it’s all about making the kids feel safe.” What’s most rewarding? “Kids are so resilient! We’re making a difference in their lives and helping them through their hardest times. The collaboration with physicians and nurses is phenomenal, unlike anything I experienced in the adult world.” Are you interested in making the switch from adult care to pediatrics? • When it comes to helping babies heal and thrive, there really is no place like home. And that's what inspired Julie Lavoie, PhD, AC-PNP, to start the Enteral Feeding Program at Children’s Wisconsin. In the past, premature babies would often spend weeks or months in the hospital as they learned to feed. But thanks to Dr. Lavoie and the Enteral Feeding Program, many of these babies are able to grow and develop at home while continuing to be closely monitored by their care team. Read this blog post to learn more about this unique program and how it’s helping babies go home faster than ever. https://lnkd.in/gt9RsQqf

  • Kristy Siekert will never forget holding her newborn baby Camden and asking his pediatrician if he was going to die. And the doctor replied, “I don’t know.” Camden had just been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes a loss of muscle strength and control. SMA is extremely rare. So rare, in fact, that most doctors will go their whole careers and never see a case. But not Nancy Bass, MD, a pediatric neurologist with the Children’s Wisconsin Neurosciences Center. She’s cared for more than 50 babies with SMA. And as soon as Camden was referred to her care, Kristy remembers feeling a weight being lifted off her shoulders. Read this blog post to learn more about how Dr. Bass gave the Siekert family hope, comfort and care. https://lnkd.in/gssqWiqa

  • Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them. For Abbie, a seasoned nurse who had worked with adults for more than six years, pediatrics was never part of the plan — until a travel assignment at Children's Wisconsin changed everything. “I was actually opposed to pediatrics for years, but after just one day here, I knew this was where I wanted to be long-term. Caring for a child is one of the most special experiences I've had in nursing — you really feel like you're changing their little world.” The transition? Surprisingly smooth. “The hardest part was learning the protocols, not the patients or families. Parents are understandably emotional in these situations, and once you empathize with them, it becomes easier to be that calm, comforting presence.” For Abbie, the most rewarding part is being there for children on their most stressful days. “I'll never forget holding a child as he woke up from surgery, waiting for his parents. Being a safe, gentle place for a child to wake up without fear — it changed how I see my work.” Considering the switch to pediatrics? “Children’s Wisconsin isn’t for you if you don’t want to get attached. These children will steal your heart every day.” Inspired? Start your journey: https://lnkd.in/gPjc2yjt
