CBA alumnus, Jack Wagner ’14, and CBA trustee, Julie Hashagen, along with their spouses and fellow business partners, have teamed up to open a new coffee shop in Norfolk. Fr8 House Coffee opened December 13, 2024 and is in the Railyard at Lamberts point, right next to the train tracks, hence their name Fr8 House Coffee. We are very excited to support Jack, Julie, and the rest of the team as they welcome us to their space to connect, work or just simply relax over an extraordinarily curated cup of coffee and delightful bite to eat.

For the last three weeks, students, families, and other community members have been collecting food items for the food drive to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. This past Wednesday, students from the Lower and Middle school divisions worked together to pack up the donated items into boxes and loaded them onto the CBA van. A short trip was made over to the Foodbank offices in Norfolk, where the items were donated to people in need. Students unloaded the items with the assistance of the warehouse workers, and weighed everything - which totaled 255 pounds. That is equivalent to 212 meals! Students also got a tour of the facility and learned about the process of how the food is distributed to those in need. Thank you to all those who donated, and thank you to the students, faculty, and staff that assisted with getting the items where they needed to be.

In honor of National School Psychology Week, CBA would like to share our gratitude for our school counselor Mrs. Traci Haly. Traci joined the CBA community in 2021 and works regularly with students to help them develop the social skills and coping strategies needed to optimize their academic learning. Every week, Traci teaches social skills class to lower schoolers and community building class for all middle schoolers. Traci also offers voluntary lunch clubs at the middle and upper school levels, which enhance the skills taught in these classes. We are so grateful to Traci and her continued dedication to our students.

Mainstream teachers offer direct instruction in reading through the third grade, then students are expected to shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." This thinking is a fallacy. Even when decoding has been mastered, students benefit from continued work on comprehension and higher order thinking skills that will serve them well as they move forward into higher education and careers. https://lnkd.in/enUdpHAJ
