About 7 million deaths globally are associated with unhealthy diets each year. This problem is preventable.🌎 Clear and visible front-of-package warning labels such as “excess sugar” and “high in sodium” can help consumers quickly identify unhealthy foods and in turn, make healthier choices. Cities are remarkable places. They are storehouses of history. They are diverse and vibrant, with a buzz that inspires action. And they have challenges – issues that affect their citizens directly. That makes them ideal laboratories for innovation and adaptation. In Government Technology, City of Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin describes the city and civic teamwork that helped create Birmingham Talks, a program that helps parents develop their children’s language skills at an early age. The idea was modified from City of Providence, which received support through our Mayors' Challenge – a competition that rewards novel municipal ideas and encourages their replication. We’ve assisted 337 cities in adapting the most successful winning plans to their own communities, Birmingham among them.
