#DigitalPublicInfrastructure is transforming how nations respond to crises and deliver essential services. In his recent #GatesNotes article, Bill Gates highlights examples transformative power of #DPI in addressing urgent needs and strengthening public services globally: In Togo, #DPI enabled the rapid scaling of emergency aid during the #COVID-19 pandemic. Within just 10 days, the system reached 1.8 million people, ensuring critical support was delivered swiftly and efficiently to those in need. In Côte d’Ivoire, digital systems changed vaccine delivery by tracking vaccinator attendance and enabling mobile payments. Over 99% of vaccinators were paid within a week, a significant improvement from the months-long delays of paper-based systems. This efficiency built trust in the process and ensured life-saving vaccines reached more children. According to Gartner Research, governments globally are projected to spend over $800 billion on technology in 2024. A closer look reveals that 88% of the $800 billion in government tech spending will be used by developed economies with 2.5 billion people. Meanwhile, the other 160 countries, representing 5.5 billion people, face a future of debt if they follow the expensive siloed digitisation model. Co-Develop CEO CV Madhukar highlights that with endless #RFPs, contracts, and full-stack solutions, more money goes to tech companies, leaving little for the people who need it most. Worse, this slows down progress toward the #SDGs. But by shifting toward reusing digital assets and prioritising smarter approaches to digitisation, countries can avoid debt traps and accelerate sustainable progress. At #OpenAmerica2024, CDPI and Co-Develop co-organized a side event, “Multi-stakeholder approaches to govern and design new Digital Public Infrastructure.” Together with panelists from the Brazilian Ministry of Management and Innovation, Central Bank of Brazil, The Data Tank, and Co-Develop, we explored how governments, private sector, and civil society can collaborate to leverage DPI for stronger democratic institutions. Key insights included the need for inclusive policies, trust-building, and people-centered data governance. Special thanks to Pedro Saliba (Data Privacy Brasil), ILDA, and Open Knowledge Brasil for their support in making this happen! 📸 Check out the highlights below! #DPI #DigitalInclusion
