President James Earl ‘Jimmy’ Carter Jr., our nation's 39th President and the fifth consecutive President to serve in the U.S. Navy, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. The Center for Maritime Strategy mourns the loss of President Carter, who devoted his life to public service. In an interview with 60 minutes in June of 1985, President Carter recalled his relationship with then-Captain Hyman Rickover when he was an ensign. When asked how Admiral Rickover took to President Carter now being his commander-in-chief, he responded that “I never really felt like his boss, although he would say I was. I’m not sure he acknowledged it really deep down in his heart.”

Nicholas Weising writes in the latest MOC publication, "NATO states rely on the U.S. Navy to provide for their maritime security. For much of the alliance’s history, the United States has kept permanent forward-deployed naval forces in European waters. Additionally, due to its size and combat experience, the U.S. Navy has supplied, and continues to supply, NATO with much of its senior naval leadership. European seapower has withered due to its reliance on the United States." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eFfSXR6S

Michael Purzycki writes for the MOC: "In recent decades, India and the United States have dramatically increased their security cooperation. While they are not full-fledged allies, the two countries understand they have many common interests: notably confronting Chinese aggression, but also trade and tackling non-state threats like terrorists and pirates." https://lnkd.in/ewv7VVtN
