A statewide coalition founded to expand the supply of middle housing in California, including ADUs, duplexes, and more.
About us
The Casita Coalition believes that small homes - ADUs, cottage clusters, and duplexes - can improve housing choice and opportunity throughout California. We promoted recent landmark state ADU laws that now help tens of thousands of California families add a “Casita” to their backyard. Our Coalition includes planners, advocates, academics, builders, architects, business associations, and retired professionals dedicated to working together to expand these naturally affordable “Casitas” through all types of neighborhoods in California. Working in coalition, we develop and share best practices and policies with homeowners, practitioners and decision-makers state-wide. Visit our website to learn more.

Economic Mobility/Housing/Racial Equity Champion, Houser, Researcher, Problem Solver, Coalition Builder, Convener
As CEO of Casita Coalition, part of my onboarding included joining the ADU Principles Cohort within #CasitaAcademy. Over the course of three weeks, I was immersed in an engaging mix of self-paced lessons and interactive workshops that deepened my understanding of how to navigate California’s ADU laws. If you’re involved within the broader housing ecosystem and feel overwhelmed about all of the ADU changes, don’t really know where to go for answers, if you’re hearing conflicting information, or are just curious about ADUs, this is a great way to learn in community. What I loved about the course was that my cohort included a diverse group of builders, planners and housing advocates. The discussions and questions we had among ourselves made the class extra special. I highly encourage folks who are interested in learning more to join the January cohort. (Scholarships are available.) A big thank you to JPMorganChase for generously funding Casita Academy’s growth and for California Homebuilding Foundation for providing the initial funding that made our cohorts possible. Expanding housing options is crucial to addressing the affordability crisis—and it’s a conversation we were proud to be part of at the National Housing Conference's annual ‘Solutions for Affordable Housing’ event last week. During ‘The Missing Middle: Strategies for Expanding Housing Options’ panel, Zillow shared insights from the ‘Build the Middle Playbook,’ created in partnership with Casita Coalition. This guide equips advocates, policymakers, and community leaders with actionable tools to create equitable and affordable housing solutions. Ready to take action? A fire alarm and an eventful halftime show that involved herding hundreds of people down 13 sets of stairs didn't stop us. I loved sharing the stage with colleagues Anna G. Boone, Laurie Goodman, and Cindy Waldron as we discussed a path forward toward solving our housing supply crisis. Thank you to National Housing Conference for hosting this critical conversation. 1. Middle Housing works and starting small tends to be the best strategy. 2. Removing zoning barriers is only the first step toward ensuring necessary housing gets built. 3. Missing middle includes missing middle housing and missing middle income. Resources and proven track records exist for both. We just need scale and wide adoption. 4. The Build the Middle Playbook offers a guide to change makers who want to make a difference in their community. https://lnkd.in/g7GgPz3x #BuildtheMiddle #MiddleHousing #MissingMiddle Casita Coalition

The Casita Coalition is proud to have played a critical role in launching California's ADU revolution. I'm looking forward to sharing the stage with Sarah Karlinsky, Ramie Dare, Annie Fryman and Steve Wertheim as we discuss what we've learned from California's advances in zoning and land-use reform. Thank you to the Terner Center for Housing Innovation for hosting this important conversation.
In recent years, California has become fertile ground for land-use innovation at the state level. From Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) reform to density bonus law, to upzoning commercial corridors and strengthening housing element law, California has been pursuing an “all of the above” approach. What can other states learn from this experimentation? What is working on the ground and what isn’t? What are the remaining barriers to increasing zoned capacity that can be addressed at the state level? Join us on Tuesday, December 3 for a webinar on the above questions with Sarah Karlinsky, Ramie Dare, Annie Fryman, Noerena Limon, and Steve Wertheim. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gRNTjjd4

The ADU revolution is making waves and Casita Coalition is at the forefront! Featured in Dwell, the article highlights how ADUs are helping California communities meet their housing needs. A Snapshot of the Impact Captured: ✅ ADUs provide affordable, flexible housing for families, renters, and aging-in-place. ✅ Since helping to shape California's 2017 ADU law, we've seen more than 113,000 permits issued statewide— a grassroots solution with a sizeable impact. ✅ New policies, like AB 1033 (ADU condos) and SB 1211 (Multifamily ADUs) are paving the way for even more affordable housing solutions. We're proud to be driving innovative middle housing initiatives. Let’s continue to build the middle! 🏠 📖 Read more about the movement and our role in reshaping housing policy: https://lnkd.in/gMeajkDQ #ADUs #MiddleHousing #BuildTheMiddle
