"Win. Win. Win"... is what Melissa Strong (Vertex staff) shared with the room below, referring to herself, her employer, and the student because supporting work-based learning for underrepresented high school youth is NOT simply charity; it's also good for business (leadership development for existing staff and talent/workforce development for the region) and yes, our students and communities benefit as well. With research from The Brookings Institution and San Diego Regional EDC; delivery with partners like San Diego Unified School District; partners like Illumina, Deloitte, Carrier Johnson + Culture, and Hawthorne Cat; leadership from policymakers like Raul A. Campillo and Nora E Vargas); and funding from a combo of philanthropy/school districts/government, the ecosystem of workforce development for high school students continues to grow and doesn’t live with any one organization. Thanks to the amazing team at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Britt, Lateefah, Centrila McGee, Sabine Hadida, Melissa, etc), the dozens of existing and future partners in the room and to my colleagues Pana Hap and Hanna Jensen who continue to drive this initiative – you are the change agents our communities deserve. From 100 students this past summer to 300 projected for 2025 and a goal of 500-750 in 2026… LETS GOOO!!!! 🌟 Fostering a Diverse Workforce Through Summer Internships 🌟 This week, I had the privilege of hosting a great event alongside Junior Achievement. The convening brought together industry leaders and partners (in business, biotech, law, architecture, utilities, restaurants, finance, education, energy, communications, and the city of San Diego) to discuss a crucial initiative: employing a diverse workforce through summer internship opportunities for high school students. The meeting brought together organizations committed to making a meaningful impact on the next generation of talent. Key highlights from our discussion: 🔹 Program Logistics: Best practices for structuring internships that provide students with real-world experience while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. 🔹 Volunteer Experiences: Insights from managers and mentors who shared the rewards and challenges of guiding young interns and helping them develop both hard and soft skills. 🔹 Scaling and Improving Programs: Ideas for how companies can start their own internship initiatives or enhance existing ones to ensure they are inclusive, impactful, and accessible to students from all backgrounds. The conversation emphasized the importance of not just providing opportunities but creating environments where diverse perspectives can thrive and contribute to innovation. 🌍 It’s exciting to see so many organizations working together to build pathways for high school students—especially those from underrepresented communities—into future careers. Sending a huge thank you to Sabine Hadida, Britt Davis, Sidd Vivek, Hanna Jensen, Pana Hap, Melissa Strong, and Centrila McGee for collaborating to make this event happen! #DiversityInclusion #WorkforceDevelopment #InternshipOpportunities #YouthEmpowerment #FutureLeaders #InclusiveHiring
