𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞—𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡? As Program Chair of the ALFA International Women’s Initiative Practice Group (WIPG) meeting in 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 I had the privilege of planning an event that explored a powerful re-branding of vulnerability—not as a limitation, but as a source of strength and empathy. In a profession that often demands toughness, embracing vulnerability can lead to deeper self-awareness, transparency, and more meaningful connections with colleagues and clients alike. Our journey included three impactful discussions: ✨ 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡: We explored how vulnerability can empower us, especially in high-stakes roles, by helping us learn from challenges, connect authentically, and build supportive work environments. Strength isn’t the absence of struggle—it’s about how we grow through it. Melanie Gassler-Tischlinger,Agota Peterfy, Lisa Wintersheimer Michel ✨ 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬: Mentorship, particularly for young women in the legal field, is about more than professional advice. It’s about providing the space, confidence, and support for mentees to thrive in both personal and professional arenas. Margaret Metzinger, Megan Stumph-Turner, Esine Okudzeto ✨ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: We discussed the unique paths women in law take toward leadership, balancing choices and challenges while celebrating every step forward. Women bring essential perspectives to firm management, strengthening both the firm and the profession as a whole. Agnes Fuentevilla Padilla, Dawn Dillon, Gero Schneider Thank you to everyone who contributed to these conversations, to Kimberly P. Harris and Denise Baker-Seal as my further colleagues in the WIPG Leadership Team and Jessica Zaroski Bauer, Michelle Murphy-Jones, Taylor Doherty and Arielle Aaron for all the help in planning this ! #tiefenbacher #ALFAIABM #ALFAIWIPG #mentorship
