Today marks World Earth Day, a reminder for all of us to reflect on the health of our planet and take action to protect it. As we celebrate this day, it's crucial to shed light on the severity of plastic pollution in Sri Lanka, a pressing environmental issue that demands immediate attention. Here are 6 eye-opening facts about plastic pollution in Sri Lanka: 1. Wildlife Impact: Over the past decade, an estimated 20 elephants have tragically died in Sri Lanka due to plastic pollution, alongside countless other wild animals. 2. Massive Plastic Waste Generation: Sri Lanka generates more than 1.5 million tons of plastic waste every year, with nearly half of it ending up in water bodies, including canals, rivers, and the Indian Ocean. 3. Low Recycling Rate: Shockingly, only three percent of the plastic products consumed in Sri Lanka are recycled, significantly below the global average of 7.2 percent. 4. Rising Dengue Cases: The correlation between plastic waste and the spread of diseases like dengue fever is alarming, with cases soaring from 35,000 in 2021 to 76,600 in the following year. 5. Urban Waste Composition: Single-use plastics constitute almost 15 percent of urban waste in Sri Lanka, exacerbating environmental degradation and public health risks. 6. Enforcement Challenges: Despite previous bans on plastic shopping bags, lax enforcement has hindered efforts to curb plastic pollution, underscoring the need for stronger implementation and public awareness.
