𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 I had the pleasure of meeting with a longtime client for lunch and the main topic of discussion was "The lost art of leadership." What attributes of a person make them a strong leader, how do you train new ones and how do we get our newer generation up to speed on how to become strong leaders. 𝗔𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. In the spirit of the conversation I have included the top 3 characteristics we look for when vetting individuals for leadership positions and have included some resources. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 A strong leader provides a clear, compelling vision for their team. Simon Sinek, in his book Start With Why, emphasizes the importance of understanding the “why” behind your actions. Leaders with vision inspire others by connecting their goals to a larger purpose. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 Empathy is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Brené Brown, in Dare to Lead, highlights how vulnerability and emotional connection foster trust and resilience. Leaders who listen and value their teams’ perspectives create cultures of mutual respect and psychological safety. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 Resilient leaders stay composed and optimistic even in the face of adversity. Angela Duckworth, in Grit, argues that passion and perseverance are essential for achieving long-term goals. Leaders with resilience inspire their teams to persist through challenges. Leaders who embody these traits not only achieve results but also leave a lasting impact on their teams and organizations. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲: 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸." As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, this quote invites us to reflect not just on the blessings in our lives but on the challenges that shaped them. In both business and life, setbacks are inevitable. 𝙴̲𝚖̲𝚋̲𝚛̲𝚊̲𝚌̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲ ̲𝙲̲𝚑̲𝚊̲𝚕̲𝚕̲𝚎̲𝚗̲𝚐̲𝚎̲𝚜̲ ̲𝚊̲𝚜̲ ̲𝙻̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚜̲𝚘̲𝚗̲𝚜̲ In business, challenges are constant—missed opportunities, failed strategies, or unforeseen crises. The difference between organizations that thrive and those that falter often lies in their ability to learn from adversity. In life, personal hardships can feel overwhelming. But by seeking the lessons hidden within the pain—whether it's learning resilience, gaining clarity on priorities, or understanding deeper aspects of yourself—you transform suffering into growth. 𝙱̲𝚞̲𝚒̲𝚕̲𝚍̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲ ̲𝚁̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚒̲𝚕̲𝚒̲𝚎̲𝚗̲𝚝̲ ̲𝙲̲𝚞̲𝚕̲𝚝̲𝚞̲𝚛̲𝚎̲𝚜̲ ̲𝚒̲𝚗̲ ̲𝙱̲𝚞̲𝚜̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚎̲𝚜̲𝚜̲ In Times of Change: Leaders who communicate optimism while acknowledging the challenges help their teams navigate transitions with confidence. These approaches reflect a commitment to focusing on lessons rather than hurts, driving long-term success for both the business and its people. 𝙶̲𝚛̲𝚊̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚝̲𝚞̲𝚍̲𝚎̲ ̲𝚊̲𝚜̲ ̲𝚊̲ ̲𝙲̲𝚊̲𝚝̲𝚊̲𝚕̲𝚢̲𝚜̲𝚝̲ ̲𝚏̲𝚘̲𝚛̲ ̲𝙶̲𝚛̲𝚘̲𝚠̲𝚝̲𝚑̲ Thanksgiving is an ideal time to reflect on the role of gratitude in overcoming adversity. In business, gratitude fosters stronger relationships—with employees, clients, and partners. A leader who openly expresses appreciation not only motivates their team but also builds loyalty. On a personal level, gratitude shifts focus from what’s missing to what’s meaningful. It doesn’t mean ignoring the pain of setbacks, but rather recognizing the gifts within them. Perhaps the loss of a job led to an unexpected career pivot or a failed project became the seed for a more impactful idea. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻: The Hardships: What was the toughest moment you faced this year? What did it teach you? The Opportunities: How can those lessons shape your goals and relationships moving forward? By focusing on the lessons within life’s inevitable challenges, you honor both the pain and the growth it brings. As a result, you’ll not only foster a deeper sense of gratitude but also build the resilience to tackle whatever comes next—whether in the boardroom or at home. 𝗔 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗵 May your holiday be filled with gratitude for the lessons you’ve learned, the people who support you, and the growth still to come. Because in every challenge, there’s a chance to evolve. ARTEMIS Partners of Houston
