Withdrawal of foreign investment in China continues to accelerate, dropping another $8.1 billion in 3Q and bringing total FDI to -$13 billion through the first 9 months of 2024. Should FDI in China finish the year negative, it would be the first time in almost 25 years. Conversely, Chinese investment outflows into other countries continues to rise as the country gears up for a potential trade war with the U.S. Chinese overseas assets increased $34 billion in 3Q, bringing total outflows this year to $143 billion – the 3rd highest total on record. Continued decoupling of dependency on Chinese manufacturing is a major shift in the supply chain. Industrial demand in the U.S. and its USMCA partners is expected to benefit from this evolving trend.
