About us

Black Mountain Productions is a small production company with over a decade of experience creating engaging, high-quality content. With a focus on compelling storytelling and visual excellence, we bring dedication and creativity to every project we undertake. Recently, we completed our first documentary short, Moving Line, a story of the first crossing of Colorado by skis. The name Black Mountain Productions comes from the story of the last grizzly bear in Colorado. His name was Old Mose. During the turn of the 19th century, he terrorized the people of Fremont County, Colorado; killing livestock, household pets, and, as rumor had it, as many as 40 men. In 1904, after years of scourge, he was finally taken down on the side of Black Mountain. Weighing in at almost 800 pounds, it took a professional hunter, 15 hunting dogs, and 6 bullets to bring down the great grizzly bear. Grizzly’s have since disappeared from the mountains of Colorado. But Black Mountain still stands at 11,650 feet tall in the remote South Park Hills of Colorado. Most visitors would never drive past, and even many Coloradans don’t know its name; its most noteworthy historical claim being the location of Old Mose’s last stand. But nestled in-between the aspens and pines at the base of the mountain, is a small wood cabin; built by my father, grandfather and uncles. And it’s been our family getaway in the shadow of Black Mountain ever since.

  • Presenting the trailer for Moving Line! Black Mountain Production's first documentary short, Moving Line, tells the story of the first crossing of Colorado by skis. In 1978, three amateur skiers embarked on an extraordinary journey, starting in Durango, CO, and skiing a continuous line across the entire state, finishing near the Wyoming border. Moving Line not only explores this incredible 490-mile trek through Colorado's rugged terrain but also highlights the deep connections forged through the experience—between the skiers themselves, the breathtaking outdoors, and the boundless creativity and self-expression that spending time in nature inspires.

  • The final episode in our mini-doc series introduces audiences to Alexander Drummond, one of the three members of the expedition to ski across Colorado. A Boulder native, Alex has spent much of his life exploring the Colorado Wilderness on skis, bike and on foot. Somewhere along the line, Alex discovered his interest in poetry, which turned into a lifelong passion of reading and writing his own poems - many of which are inspired by his time outdoors. It's that connection between time spent outdoors and the inspiration to be creative that can result in self-expression. And while Alex set out to accomplish something unique, that connection is something shared by us all. Stay tuned next week for the release of the trailer for Moving Line!

  • Another artist featured in our mini-series about the connection between self-expression and spending time in nature. John King is a resident of Lyons, CO, an acclaimed artist, and one of the original members of the ski expedition featured in our film, Moving Line. John creates beautiful kinetic sculptures with pieces that balance precisely and move under the slightest influence of wind. That movement is what John identifies as art. In 1978, John and his companions skied across the state of Colorado, becoming the first people to do so. The trip was monumentally inspirational to his career as an artist, as they found themselves gliding across the land, leaving a continuous line behind them. That moving line is what connects John's inspiration for self-expression to his love for the outdoors. • Latasha Greene is an artist based in Denver, CO, whose work ranges from landscapes to illustrations to murals, all of which are inspired by her outdoor surroundings. Latasha takes notice to the smallest details in nature and incorporates the naturally occurring colors and textures into her work. She hopes that her art inspires more engagement and diversity in outdoor recreation. Follow Latasha on social media - @jitterbug_art

  • Our third artist featured in our mini-series is New Mexico's Derrick Kosea, a landscape photographer who captures the beauty of the Four Corner's region. The connection between nature and self expression has been recognized by Derrick and his family for centuries, and Derrick has a talented eye for being able to translate that connection through photography. His favorite part of being an artist is sharing that interpretation with others. Follow Derrick on Instagram -@d_kosea_kaptures

  • Our next artist featured in our mini-series is Durango's Hannah Wilson. Hannah's art encapsulates the beauty of the southwest, using a full spectrum of colors she interprets from each of her wild subjects. Hannah believes we all have creativity inside of us, and being outdoors is one of the ways we are able to tap into that creativity. Follow Hannah on instagram @hannahwilson.art https://lnkd.in/g_QhEipQ

  • Our first artist featured in our mini docu-series is Lamont Joseph White, a fine artist based in Park City, Utah. Lamont's art challenges the status quo of mountain sports and encourages diversity and inclusion on the slopes. As filmmakers, interviewing Lamont was inspiring and helped us bridge the gap between time spent outdoors and creative self expression. Follow Lamont on instagram - @LamontJosephWhite

  • Excited to announce that our film, Moving Line, is finally complete! After over three years of planning, production, post-production, mental breakdowns, and last minute changes, we're tying a bow on our documentary-short and are eager to share it with the world. Moving Line tells the story of the first crossing of Colorado on ski, a significant moment in Colorado and skiing history. But it also explores the unique connection between the outdoors and self-expression. Something widely experienced by those who spend time in nature. In the coming weeks, we are excited to share the profiles of four different artists whose work demonstrates that connection. Each of these artists helped us bridge the gap between ski history and creativity, and their work inspired us to explore the deeper message that our film uncovered: expedition is art. Afterwards, we will release profiles of the members of the 1978 expedition, to introduce them to our audience and highlight the way their enormous achievement impacted their own lives artistically. All this will lead up to the release of the Moving Line trailer! Stay tuned for more information about the film's premiere and where you might be able to catch a screening of Moving Line. We want to thank everyone for your ongoing support and patience through this filmmaking process. Excited for you to see Moving Line! 🎞 🎞 📽
