A membership platform empowering tastemakers to become publishers.

About us

In recent years tens of thousands of online book tastemakers have reinvigorated the $30B book industry, single-handedly igniting bestsellers and TV/movie franchises from overlooked titles. We believe these tastemakers are key to building a world of books that is more creative, independent, and equitable. We’re building a platform for them to deepen their relationship with their audience, cultivate community, earn the income they deserve, and ultimately publish tomorrow’s most beloved books. BINDERY is co-founded by Matt Kaye, former Head of Product at Patreon, Amazon Books PM, VP of Growth at seed-stage startup Inkshares, Head of Growth & Engagement at Trulia, and book marketer in publishing; and Meg Harvey, former Chief Strategy Officer at Girl Friday Productions, a firm she steered for nearly 10 years from a full-stack book production house for major publishers to award-studded, industry-leading independent publishing services company. We are united by a shared passion for the power of books and storytelling and a belief that world-changing stories can come from anywhere. We aim to build a culture that is as diverse, purposeful, and compassionate as the communities we serve.

  • ⭐ BINDERY DROP ⭐ Our first four books are officially releasing today. It would be impossible to summarize the philharmonic-level orchestra of activity that has gone into building both this company and this launch over the past year, but there isn’t enough space in a single post to thank the many people who have worked so tirelessly to make it happen. We believe the reason so many have coalesced around Bindery is because our mission matters. We’re here to build a more diverse, equitable, and independent world of books. The book industry at large has suffered as the media landscape has disintegrated over the last two decades. Especially, authors have suffered, forced to sit by as debuts become increasingly hard for publishers to break out in a rapidly fragmenting consumer landscape, as authors’ earnings dropped with their sales projections (42% on average over the last decade), and as the business doubled down on “sure bets” that look like existing bestsellers. We decided to create a publishing model that is structurally different. Bindery empowers tastemakers, who lead highly engaged communities of readers, to start their own publishing imprints and choose what books get published next. This means authors and stories that are “too niche” or “too genrebendy” for a traditional publisher to take a risk on are ones that we are happy to publish. Community investment is what makes this possible—readers are driving the kinds of stories that get created here. And community investment is also what makes us believe these stories will not be small at all. The run-up to this launch has been peppered by our books gracing dozens of “biggest and buzziest” and “best of fall” lists. We’re in second printings for several ahead of launch. Two authors have earned out their advances on subsidiary rights sales including audio for all titles, foreign editions in Germany, Italy, UK, Czech Republic, Russia, and Ukraine, subscription box buys, and film option interest. You will find Bindery Books in hundreds of independent bookstores and libraries, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart, with endorsements from heavy hitters like Rebecca Yarros, Rebecca Thorne, Melissa Albert, Emily Habeck, and TJ Klune. Behind the scenes, it’s been a whirlwind and the hardest and best work we’ve ever done. And we’re just getting started. If you would like to support us and the incredible authors we’re publishing this season, please pick up a copy at your favorite bookstore—and if they aren’t carrying it already, ask them to! Know that by supporting Bindery you are making a real contribution to change. --Matt Kaye and Meghan Harvey, cofounders

The next project from this year that I wanted to share was this book cover for And The Sky Bled by S. Hati, which will be coming out very soon! This piece was made as a paper sculpture, which I then photographed and coloured digitally. I love working on paper sculpture pieces; they're pretty labour intensive but the results are always worth the extra effort. #bookcover #coverillustration #illustration #papercut #papersculpture #papercraft #book #fantasy Bindery Books

    Cofounder / President @ Bindery

A year ago as were assembling Bindery's core team, we were approached by Charlotte Strick. Matt Kaye and I were *so* excited to hear from her. Charlotte is a legendary jacket designer and was an Art Director at FSG for 14 years before founding her own award-winning agency. She's designed countless bestselling covers for the likes of Jonathan Franzen, Lydia Davis, Jeff Vandermeer, Denis Johnson, Rachel Kushner, Christopher Isherwood, and too many more to list. We immediately hired her to work with us on Bindery's branding--to which she brought such creative energy and bookish detailing--and later to direct our first season's brilliant covers. We're absolutely thrilled to finally formalize our relationship with Charlotte as she comes onboard as Bindery's Creative Director. Welcome Charlotte Strick!
