About us
Austin Pets Alive!'s mission is to make all of central Texas no-kill for companion animals. Austin Pets Alive! created programs to save the key demographics of pets that hadn’t been making it out of our municipal shelters alive. These key groups of animals included puppies with parvovirus, unweaned kittens, cats with ringworm, dogs and cats in need of additional behavioral support and/or additional medical attention. By developing comprehensive, innovative programs that targeted these key groups of animals and pulling directly from euthanasia lists, Austin Pets Alive! has saved more than 120,000 dogs and cats since 2008.

We first learned about Tina, an adult cat, shortly after her arrival at Del Rio Animal Control, a shelter typically full of both dogs and cats. We’re not sure how she ended up residing in one of their kennels, but Tina was urgent from the moment she was plead to us. Tina was pregnant upon arrival, but due to her low weight, gave birth too early and her kittens didn’t make it. Our team was able to get her spayed to help make her more comfortable, and Tina quickly started to improve. She even became more friendly, almost as if she wanted to tell us “thank you.” Through the support of our transport partner, PetSmart Charities, Tina went to her new home in Kansas City where she’s surely spoiled with plenty of cozy, sunny nap spots and treats! 💙 Thank you, PetSmart Charities, for supporting APA! and helping to make happy tails like Tina’s possible!

Fur-eezing temperatures are here! Save these tips to keep your pets safe and warm this winter. ❄️ PSA: City of Austin is opening cold weather shelters tonight! Pets are allowed if they are not aggressive, can be around others, on a leash, and can sleep with their owners. If a pet needs a crate for the evening at the shelter, guests should inform staff at the OTC when registering. Learn more at austintexas.gov.
